I updated the bios - now it just endlessly reboots - F2, del, f5, CTRL F5, Function F5, f10 nothing works - I can't figure out how to remove the button cell.

The clear cmos on the back doesn't seem to do anything other than turn the computer off for a bit..

I got in eventually nearly 30 minutes of trying. I didn't do anything different but took a card out - never had to do that before.

Despite seeming like a convenient button you can press anytime, you still have to disconnect the PC from mains power and wait for the capacitors to discharge before pressing it can actually clear the cmos, otherwise it's still receiving power.

Thanks. It turns out it is the card I took out that is the issue. I'll post in a new thread so as not to muddy this.

The easy way to do this is flip the switch off and then press the power button on the case for a few seconds, push CMOS reset, and then flip the switch back on. I’ve never not seen that work except once: a certain BIOS was storing a few settings on the chip itself. I’ve no idea why they thought that was a good idea. They changed it in a later release.

I can reset the CMOS - what I can't do is get into the bios using a keyboard when I have the card in the slot. When I have the card out the keyboard works. Again I have tried EVERY single usb port and more than one keyboard.

Have you tried manually setting the PCI version for that slot? What version is the card?

I have tried manually setting the PCI version for that slot - same issue. I have discovered that using either raid card which worked with the old bios and work on other computers the onboard video will not work in ANY slot (video card removed). It will work without the card. I have also tried with a cheap no power 1gb video card and the on board video disabled as far as I can tell and it still won't boot.

Yep that can happen when there is a change in PCI configuration, interrupt tables. It is supposed to be able to reconfigure these things but rarely it doesn't. Remove all cards (except for video) and boot into BIOS and load setup defaults (and set time/date). Save and Exit.

I've done that many times - doesn't help me as I NEED to use one of those cards for this PC to be of any use. I'm not sure if it is an MSI thing or a 870 issue. I'm debating between buying another motherboard from a different manufacturer or just getting another intel.

You might try asking for help on an nas type forum like unRAID or something. There are many more users with RAID cards on there.

Thanks for your advice - I just posted there. I'm stoked - I just found the box my motherboard came in so I can return it if I don't hear back again from MSI - so far all they've sent me is an email asking what bios I'm on even though that was one of the questions in their questionairre gauntlet.

Try updating the BIOS again, but with not the card in and no drives attached. Wait for it to reboot at least once, probably will be a two phase update for the EC like many. After it completes for any final time it will boot to a prompt about an error like time or date, CMOS checksum, etc then enter SETUP, set time and date all options the way you want. Save and Exit. Let it reboot once more to the boot menu (no valid boot devices). Now POWER OFF the PC and add in your card.

Thanks. I'll try - seems like I did that but I could be wrong.

I downloaded the firmware again, extracted it to a new thumb drive - ejected the drive. Put the drive in my new PC.

I disconnected my drives. I hit del on boot - in the bios I click on the thumb drive icon m flash - selected update on reboot. There was no phase 2, no mention of setting the clock or cmos checksum.

I powered it off - tried my first card - tried all 3 slots - usb disabled couldn't get it to boot - couldn't get into the bios

Reset CMOS

Powered it off - tried the other card - same issue in all 3 slots. Onboard video does not work. Put the other card in to any slot onboard video does not work. I have no other cards in the system - just one raid card at a time. My old systems have a Raid card, 10gbit nic and a gaming card. All of them work TOGETHER without issue - same cards. I unplugged the drives and verified with the other raid cards all work great except on this MSI system.
