The slim NES wasn't intended to play the same games. The revised hardware is supposed to promote a shift forward in the platform's capabilities. You can't do that effectively while continuing to strengthen the lowest common denominator.

It's about like expecting Sony to continue to make new fat PS2s after releasing the slim PS2. It's a bit like expecting Nintendo to continue producing the classic Game Boy after releasing the Game Boy Pocket. It's a bit like expecting them to keep producing the original GBA after producing the GBA SP (not like having them continue to produce the back lit GBA SP next to the Nintendo DS).

Like my examples, these aren't different platforms. They are improvements and extensions to the existing platforms. Everything we know about the Neo is intended to extend the platform to promote 4K TV sales while guaranteeing continued support for the old/underlying platform.

Now, if Scorpio forces their hand to make a different, cost-prohibitive upgrade then I can see a Neo 2 sold along side continued production of a Neo 1, but that's only once cost effectively distinguishes the platforms. Neo is basically just a UHD Blu-Ray bump which is something half the owners at launch expected with a FW update. The enhanced performance for games is just a bonus.

I couldn't disagree more with this. More than doubling your GPU power is not just a "bump". The Xbox One S is a UHD Blu-Ray bump. Neo and Scorpio are far more powerful than their predecessors. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Neo launches at $500, though lower would be nice. I'll be surprised if Scorpio costs less than $600, given the horsepower they are promising, but by the time it launches they may be able to squeeze it down to $500.

Due to the limitations to avoid fragmentation of the platforms, it's essentially a 1080p/FPS bump for games that won't be allowed to do anything intensive enough to differentiate further. It's not nearly as big a bump as Scorpio and almost all of the extra HP will be used in ensuring 1080p/4K for the same content that also runs on the lesser GPU.

Which is fine to me. There is still lots of potential for games to look and run better at 1080p. Moving up resolution would just ensure sub 30fps games that have less than impressive visuals and/or smaller game worlds with limited draw distance etc.

I just mean that trying to push 4K doesn't make everything suddenly look like real life. Developers can do a lot more to make a game look better and more immersive from a visual standpoint without pushing resolution up. I think it is also important because there is a lack of gamer adoption of 4K displays still.
 
Just got some email from GameStop. Apparently it's called the PlayStation pro. They are offering $125 trade in any ps4 or Xbox console through 9-13.

I still have a bunch of games to play but I haven't played on either of my consoles in a while. I wonder if best buy will have some type of trade in deal as well.

so they expect people to trade in their PS4 1 month before the new system even comes out?

Nope....as flaky as the last two generations of consoles were, I would keep my original as a spare.

I've always seen them do this before. You rarely found a trade in deal when a new console came out that month. I am considering it since I'm not really using my ps4 currently. At least it's the same price as the regular ps4 when it launched.

At the same time I'd like to see if there is any difference at all.

That's it? I think just last year they ran a promotion for $100 on a LAST gen console to upgrade to the current gen. Only $25 more for the current gen trade-in... that's a slap in the face.

Yea at one point I got $150 for my ps3 towards an Xbox one sometime a year ago. I checked best buy and they only offer $120.
 
lol, "twice" the gpu power. 30fps 1080p to 4k? Yeah no. The math on that is wrong. You need four times as much GPU power, Sony. Not two. And we're talking 30fps.

That's why they are saying (guardedly) that the PS4 Pro isn't going to render games natively at 4K. It will run them at some lower resolution (1440p maybe?) and upscale. I'm much more interested in the ability to get great performance and visuals at 1080p - the PS4 Pro is going to be awesome for that.
 
I'm really not sure what good it will do on standard 1080p tvs anyway. Are the games I currently have going to look really that more better? Since I have best buy gamers club I can get $132 for trading in the ps4.

Question is will that price drop before the pro is out.
 
Well if nothing else twice the power could mean 60fps at 1080p instead of 30fps. Kind of a pain when Witcher starts at 30 and dips to 22fps.

Better just trade it in now if you're that worried about it, cause it will surely never go any higher, and will drop like a rock once the Pro is out. Though I don't really understand caring at all what you'll get on a trade-in when you can sell it for almost double any day of the week.

Even listing it at $200 you will have people low balling you for it. I should give it a shot.
 
I just bought one (in June) with no games from a coworker of mine for $250. They just posted it on Facebook, first come first serve.

That's one of the things Sony mentioned yesterday. 1080p gamers can benefit from increased frame rates and much more stable frame rates overall.

That's one title and while they are saying it runs 30fps on the Pro this is also with the addition of it rendering above 1080p and scaling to 4k. So it's doing more work but keeping the same frame rate. Online games will run at the same FPS on both systems so there is no advantage. Sony already said this so I don't know why Gamespot is speculating on that at all. It's already been set in stone that developers cannot give an advantage to pro owners in online titles.
 
I like the Slim but it's more or less unnecessary with the release of the Pro. I pre-ordered my original PS4 as soon as I was able back in 2012 or 2013. I love it but I haven't used it nearly as much as I did my PS3. Of course I work full time now but it's a great machine.

Don't really like that "three tier" design of the Pro, otherwise I would consider upgrading.
 
Took a look in Craigslist in my area and prices really dropped for the ps4. Bundled with games and sometimes two controllers someone could get one easily for $120-150.
 
One thing I haven't seen mentioned much is a revised controller. Apparently (and not sure if all or just the new one do this) you can now plug them into the USB port on the ps4 pro (only that one, for now) and reduce the latency. Im not sure I've ever noticed this, but good for some players and games.

Unfortunately I'm not seeing enough reason to upgrade right now. Regular one in general plays 1080 games fine for me. Doubt my plasma supports HDR, so that update is lost, and I certainly don't have a 4k TV or plan to get one anytime soon.
 
My only concern is if I end up with a 4k TV. My buddy got one for $450 and it's a decent Vizio model. My current TV has a bum HDMI port so if I find a deal on a 4k TV then maybe it would make sense.

Still I don't get why they didn't put a 4k Blu-ray player in there.
