silencers (suppressors, technically) make it so you don't blow your ears out. that's all they do. their portrayal in the movies of being dead silent is inaccurate. so in theory, yes, they have some personal protection use since the intended use is for defense, and who walks around (or sleeps) with ear plugs in?
wtf? How often do you get robbed that you need to think about long term hearing damage caused by too many gun shots?

If this were a major problem, I'm sure police unions would have jumped on it a long time ago.

Even one gunshot indoors can do a lot of permanent damage to your hearing? Why should one of have to take any level of hearing damage because someone, who deserves to die, decides to try and rob us?

I know the sole purpose of a silencer is to execute people in silence and secret.

Let me guess. You know this because you saw it in the James Bond movie. Right? Am I right? Yeaaaaaa, I'm right

Before acting as if you know what a silenced gun sounds like in real life... why don't you try hearing what one sounds like?

You're always a little bit past the "special" line

WTF, this shit needs to be illegal. Someone could take this to a theatre and start shooting people in the back of the head and no one would notice.

You could sneak into somones home in the dead of night and execute them in their sleep without anyone noticing. You could go bedroom to bedroom killing the whole family. This gun is designed to execute in silence. Sick.

Troll post or not, there are probably a lot of overprotective soccer moms in Connecticut who think like this. This thing will probably end up on the ban list, along with all of those "deadly" .22 caliber AR-15's

The main rifle I will be packing around to use the can with is this Remington 700 AAC-SD I put together -

18156827564_6f4dbb1927_h.jpg

Has a Nightforce NXS 3.5-15 scope with Nightforce one piece base, KRG bolt lift, and YHM muzzle brake attachment for the suppressor (A YHM Phantom LTA).

I also plan to maybe use my AR-15, which has a YHM compatible mount as well, but a flash hider instead of a brake. I doubt I will use that much for hunting though.

I really, really wanted to get the SilencerCo Omega or Harvester, but the Omega was not in stock when I ordered from silencershop, and the YHM was on sale for $600. It maxes out with 308, but for larger calibers I plan to pick up that new SilencerCo Hybrid they announced last week, which can be used from pistol calibers all the way to 45-70.

Giggity!

I like that scope! You got any medium bores that you were going to use with the Hybrid, or is it going to be pistol only? I'm guessing with that barrel the can will come in real handy. I tried a Springfield M14 SOCOM at a friends place a year or two ago, and only had foam plugs on me. Yeah not cool, never traveling without my Howard Leight muffs again!

Damn, you have a 7mm Rem Mag ?

Yep. It's not exactly a rare caliber, just my preferred tool for elk. Maybe big white tail at distance. In the North Woods unless you're hunting in an orchard or man made field odds are you are in the 'puckerbrush,' so close range shooting is more common. It's why the .35 Remington still has a following up here (think the 30-30's older, beefier brother).

7mm Remington Magnum is one of my favorites. Shoots flatter and hits harder than a .30-06. Great load out West where you can often have need to take shots at 500yds plus. Not as cheap or easy to find as .30-06, but as a necked down version of that classic I believe you can load your own 7mm rounds using spent '06 brass without too much tooling around.

Wow. I have to go tinker with guns now... night all!

It's funny how people are so scared of silencers. I'm personally not a gun person and I prefer it here in Canada where it's not so easy to get a gun, but that said, in a nation where everyone carries a gun like it's a cell phone, what's the difference if it has a silencer or not? If someone wants to kill you, the first thing going through your mind wont be how loud it is, it will be the bullet. :p

I plan to use the hybrid for everything except the AR, that bolt gun, and for ringside. I have a marlin 1895 in 45-70 that I get aroused thinking about shooting suppressed, and of it will handle it, my 375 H&H would be awesome to shoot suppressed as well.

ROFL!! Yep, everyone needs a silencer for "personal protection".
Imagine you're rolling in your car peacefully with your loved ones through the rolling hills of San Francisco. Then, a wild horde of cyclists appeared out of nowhere and started to swarm your car, and some of them started laying down in front of you.

Now, one of them leaned its bike on your car, and started yelling "YOU'RE DONE!!! YOU'RE DONE!!!".

It then proceeded to remove its U-Lock from the bike, and started swinging wildly in your general direction, striking your vehicle multiple times, and glass might have shattered...

You reach for your pistol, point it at the wild beast and start thinking "damn, if I blast this fool, my wife and kid might be deaf for the rest of their lives. Hold on, let me put on this silencer here..."

You see, you wouldn't have to think twice had your firearm come with a built-in suppressor. You'd be a hero for ridding the world of a diseased creature.

When will hand held guns shoot lasers?
That should be completely silent compared to this garbage.
Pew pew

With the direction they went with electric cars and hybrids, they'll probably force laser firearms manufacturers add speakers onto their guns:(.

I don't have a problem with this type of gun. In fact, I actually think it is better for most situations. Lowering the muzzle velocity (and eliminating that super sonic crack that makes a gun shot so identifiable) will reduce how much the bullet can penetrate behind the target. I would wager in most home defense situations, identifying what is behind your target is an afterthought for most people, so this helps reduce the potential for accidents.

How long before we see 500 round machine guns, with built in silencers sold on the street corners. This is what gun nuts want.

Are you talking belt fed or drum type magazines? It makes a huge difference towards my opinion if this would be a good or bad thing.

Suppressors do not reduce the velocity of the round. You can just shoot 147g ammo out of this and it will already be subsonic.

An idea that's already been done with more effective designs using more effective ammunition mind you. You need a horse pistol? Get a horse pistol. You want a shotgun, get a shotgun. Combining the two gets you something that doesn't excel in either category. But hey, with a name like The Judge it will sell. Hence my opinion of it being gimmicky. My FiL has one, he started off loving it but now is much less impressed. He didn't care for my opinion on .410 for self-defense initially, but now seems to agree after playing around with it. Only puts .45 in it now, mumbles about how he should have gotten something smaller and more practical. Maybe I shouldn't have told him about the Serbu Shorty. ;) You want to settle an attacker down in a hurry, hard to beat 12 gauge, especially with those Winchester self-defense loads that hold ball and disc projectiles. Nasty! http://serbu.com/supershorty.html

Hey, anything is better than fingernails. Given a bad situation my disdain for .410 would evaporate pretty quickly. I'd made a .22 short work if I had too.

Obviously, particularly for people who know why Taurus made them to begin with. A courtroom's judge is usually within 30ft of the psycho who is contemplating rushing the bench with a shiv or captured sidearm. No Kentucky windage needed here folks.

At close range, you almost don't need to aim. You can't do that with a 45. Collateral damage could become a real issue though. My guess is you'd load .410 in the first chamber, .45 in the next four. The first round is just to hurt the other fellow, and scare the piss out of him, the next four prove you're serious.
I think most folks buy them just cause they make a big bang.

For anyone else that will actually care, I'm going to leave this video of what a suppressor really does to the noise a .22 makes.

SPOILER the sneezing queef sound that Hollywood would like you to believe is what a supressor sounds like is a bunch of BS /SPOILER

The Russians have this shit figured out. Silenced 12.7mm sniper rifle:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Irj1rD6g1hY
It can be fired indoor without hearing protection.

I think it's weird that guns don't have silencers as a standard feature. Does anyone actually enjoy firing a hunting rifle and having their ears ring?

That's a crappy suppressor. Better example of a proper .22 setup. The sound you're hearing is mainly the pistol cycling.

Then why are they still loud?

Suppressors are widely used for hunting, especially in countries other than the US.
