Due to the shape of the Insight this isn't true. At highway speeds of 60 - 75mph you can lower the windows and see no noticeable drop in mpg performance. I know because I do this with mine also. The wind noise is also lower than most other cars I've driven and much much less than my truck. I only added AC last year and only use it when it truly gets hot. Like Eli said it will cause an immediate 10% mpg drop.

But thanks for that, I knew I wasn't crazy.

The odd thing is that the article cited here says the more aerodynamic your car, the more of a MPG hit you'll take by rolling the windows down.

I think there are far too many different cars with different wind tunnel profiles to make blanket statements like that. If rolling the windows down in the Insight commanded anywhere near the performance hit that turning the A/C on does, we'd all know it.
