New PC Locks up.. help?

I just purchased an AthlonXP 1800+ and an Epox 8KHA+ mobo, with 512mb PC 2100 DDR ram to upgrade my old Athlon 800. I have everything connected and the system boots fine, however, when I tried to enter CMOS, the screen locks up and my Keyboard light shuts off (the LED display shows "7F" code).

Now, if I try to let the system boot w/o hitting CMOS, it sticks and the keyboard dies anywhere from loading the IDE channels to getting past the boot screen and the beginning of the boot process.

It's rather frustrating and I'd like any help 🙁

It's an OEM CPU with a Thermaltake VOLCANO 6Cu+. Heatsink + Dual Ball-Bearing Fan, FAN Speed: 7000±10% RPM. Max. Air Flow: 38CFM. Pure Copper base Fan.

The reason I mention that is because before the PC locks up, the temp shows 51C, which seems high, but I dunno, never had an Athlon XP before.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know how frustrating that can be....

I can't help you, but ill bump you up so someone who can will see this 😉

51° directly after hitting the power button is way to high for that mainboard. could it be that the heatsink isn't mounted properly. you should start from the mid 30s in degrees.😕

You can make sure there is proper contact with your heatsink adn the athlon XP.

You can try running the athlon 800 in your system and see what happens. What rating is your powersupply?

Seems high to me since I`ve a XP 1700+ with Epox 8KHA+ and Taisol CGK760092 with ys-tech 26CFM fan ,I`m at the moment running RC5 at 43c infact my highest temp recorded is 46c full load, I also think it`s a heatsink problem that`s causing the lockup,so makesure it`s mounted and seated right.

If you still get problems try another heatsink.

<< Did you use a nice thermal compound like Artic Silver or Artic Alumina between the CPU & the heatsync? >>

No. Non was provided either thru the fan or CPU 🙁

Where do I purchase that and is it difficult to install? I never knew I had to put something in between the heatsink and CPU. Also, did I damage the CPU by turning the power on those few times while it was locking up? Please let me know what I need to do as I'd really like to get this working.. Thanks for the help guys!!!!

Just picked up some Antec silver Thermal Compound after reading up on what the heck the stuff is 😉 Thanks for the help and pointing me in the right direction, my system is currently up and running stable at about 40C (according to packaging, that could drop w/in 48 hours as much as 4c). Now to try the games =) Woo hoo!
