Just do Torn Mind's build but swap the FX 4300 for a FX 6300 (they're the same cost).

The FX-4300 has an $11 discount with the burner I selected, so the entire basket is a bit cheaper. Yes, he can buy everything sans the case at Newegg, however, including the HDD for only $4 more. Also, the 650 Ti Boost deal is dead, so a new build is needed.

Pcpartpicker doesn't like combos and taxes. When I put the parts into the actual Newegg cart, the pre-tax subtotal is 558.82 and I calculated the after-tax total to be 604.19. Note this is BEFORE the $40 in rebates are applied for the board, case, and PSU.

Also, PCpartpicker is not very comprehensive with regards to cases, so make sure to browse Newegg itself for deals and other options with regards to cases.

FX-4100 doesnt give you much floating point capability. If you must keep it below $600, then try to find a case somewhere. Lots of people are throwing away perfectly good cases in favor of tiny computers, notebooks, and even phones. But you really should get a chip with more than 2 FPUs.

games like battlefield 3, crysis 3 and border lands

hoping to play at 1080p at the highest settings that still get me at least 40 fps

A GTX 650 is not going to be able to handle BF3 multiplayer and Crysis 3 at 1080p all-max and over 40 FPS. (Not that an XBONE or PS4 would either.) You need to spend >$300 on the GPU to make that happen. Borderlands is no problem though.
