Are Water Moccasins and Cottonmouths the same thing? Because that looks to me like a Water Moccasin.

Apparently So - good call

Cottonmouth must be a southern thing. Although around here (Mississippi), I've heard them called both, but just always though they were two different kinds of snakes.

Yep, different names, same animal.

That one looks to be on the chunky side, obviously well fed. Perfect feeding environment for snakes, they mostly feed on rodents and rodents live mostly underground. With the flooding they'll have been driven upwards and the snakes can feast.

by the way, those waters are filthy (and contaminated). how do the snakes survive?

Yep - one and the same, and that one is a monster. I would imagine that snakes and alligators are pretty rampant down there right now.

They're reptiles. Don't need the cleanest environment.

Well, at this point, the snakes that are still alive have probably found what dry areas they could. I figure it's only going to get worse as the water recedes and huge, dark piles of debris are left with plenty of rodents to feast on.

I've heard stories of how snakes can be a concern in situations like this. You've got people out there turning over debris looking for bodies right where all these snakes love to be.

They are. You have seen the satellite photos of New Orleans, right? The entire city is now swampland. It's perfect water moccasin habitat.
