At the risk of hijacking the thread, my uncle is looking to buy a SLR. He's coming from P&S, will most likely just shoot on auto and I doubt will buy any lens other than what came with the camera. So, will the D3100 be overkill?
Tell your uncle to buy a Sony NEX-3 or NEX-5 kit.

It's always interesting to see how Nikon and Canon react to each other.

Nikon intros the D300 a few years back, blows the 40D/50D out of the water. Canon strikes back with the excellent 7D, and plans on moving the 60D down a price bracket.

Now Nikon is moving the D90-replacement up a price bracket to compete with the 60D. And it looks very competitive; 39AF points, magnesium body, 100% viewfinder? This also sets Nikon up to leapfrog the 7D with a D300s-replacement.

Yeah, it's sexy. Makes me wonder if Nikon even plans on replacing the D300s.

D3100 costs less, has more advanced AF and metering, continuous AF in Live View, more dedicated controls (less menu diving).

T2i has a better LCD, slightly more resolution, will AF with all EF lenses.

D3100 has better AF that is true. 11 vs 9 pt, and the nice continuous AF, but what is better about the metering?

Doesn't the T2i now implement the 63 pt metering that the 7D includes now? I noticed its somewhat better than what I have in my T1i (when compared to my 7D).

But the AF for lenses shouldn't be a factor right? Nikon doesn't make anything that's NON AF-S anymore, and it's only a factor if you really want to use old lenses. Anything today is fine. I guess it's a little annoying the Tokina 11-16 won't AF on Nikon.

Nikon has made very impressive progresses over the years. I remember how Nikon had D70 which had all sort of problems and it was in a ackward position when compared to Canon's offerings. Some years later, Nikon has made dramatic improvements. As a Canon user, I like how Nikon is pushing Canon in terms of sales and offerings. As Nikon is doing better and better, I wonder what Canon will do. Surely, they will have to modify their offerings as they did with 7d.

And, I wonder what Nikon did with this new EXPEED 2. Nikon has been experimenting with color reproduction schemes and their last EXPEED was rather a disaster. Hopefully, they made improvements with this new version or at least they went back to D40 style. The best thing would be Nikon licensing Kodak's color algorithms. Then, we'll have a near perfect camera in terms of performace and output.

I think it'll be pretty close.
I think of the rumors, 100% viewfinder, dual card slot are the least likely.

those two also strike me as unlikely.

i'm still not certain about the magnesium body. there's a lot of scuttlebutt that canon is moving away from that for this price point. it may be that as a cost matter it came down to the swivel LCD or a magnesium body and canon picked the swivel.

it's not kodak's processing, it's their sensors.
