Always rent the top floor when possible.

Be the one making the noise, not the one hearing it :p

I always rented the top floor of every apartment I had after seeing how noisy it could be in a place that had people above.

I'm lucky that my downstairs neighbor travels a lot. Don't have to worry too much about bothering him.

Hey at least your neighbors don't beat each other senseless at 4am... Cannot wait to move!

back in my apt days we could hear the couple above us screwing. bead squeaking, headboard bashing against the wall.... it would stop then you would hear running footsteps to the bathroom and the woman puking....

yea thin walls sucked.

Only downside of this is you have to lug all your stuff up several flights of stairs when moving in/out.

sucks you're in an apt. I have 2 kids which we have outside plenty but once inside they still need to entertain themselves. You know how they say kids have a lot of energy? Yeah. Indoor soccer, basketball, etc. What do other people say... don't let them play that many games... and we don't. They stay active.

We have a fully finished basement we can opt to rent out, but don't for this reason. Would suck for the tenant. Don't be a tenant.

I would lose it because I'm in my own home and hate the landscapers every day of the week and airplanes that fly over every 4 minutes.

You should approach her when she's silent but you know she's there. Knock on the door all friendly like, smiling and shit, use a bit of charisma, small talk, etc.

Then, kinda slip it in casually, something like, <snip>
I think we can all agree this is the best solution.

lugging groceries upstairs or hearing your upstairs neighbor pounding away until 3am...

I'll take lugging groceries, thanks.

Or a civilized place with sound proofing and package service.

I got accepted to Pharmacy school prior to finishing my AA degree.

My first majors could have been Zoology, Biology, Chemistry depending on my last 3 classes which I had to withdraw from college due to my ex-wife's neck break.

My next major was Comp Sci. Did my bachelor in a year leveraging the previous stuff.

I call bullshit. You majored in Computer Science in 1 year by leveraging Biology, Zoology, and Chemistry? I'm not saying its impossible for some people, but for you it is. You don't come across as very intelligent.

Dude bro, Alky practically INVENTED the IQ test.

//edit

wow, thanks to the power of google:

Seriously though...write this down since both of you have hippie avatars you probably killed off most of the good brain cells as no real hippie would be online here really in your volume.

I was gifted, IQ on some chart over 140...I took classes that most would need to take in the past 5 years to pass because your momma threatened to sue if they failed you.

I got published a few times along the way, I thought it was gay. I have no idea what I wrote or where it went, I threw it away.

My dad was a banker, he got me a job at 12 filing papers...by 16 I was doing loan sales. By 18-19 I was saving quite a bit and picked up working in a chinese restaurant at night a few times a week and in a vet's office between classes. This veterinarian is probably in the top of all in the world. He has actually been mentioned on these forums a couple times and I didn't start the thread. I will probably be a crazy animal man by the time I die. I feed my cats very well, as much as people hate hearing animals are like people...my wife can no longer have kids. My cats are my kids... I also feed a large feral colony, I use the Kirkland cat food.

I lifted weights since middle school, I was able to try out for varsity as a freshman but a growth spurt had me blacklisted by a doctor...I took up martial arts competitively then wrestled in varsity as a senior.

I was a hacker...you won't find anything that pinpoints me to any event, but the FBI did visit me during the great mod/lod war. I never did anything that someone had to pay for. I borrowed time on systems if anything. Many were doing CC fraud during these times...I see that trend in most forums. I am adamant against stealing. I don't care if it's just a ream of paper. It's STEALING.

I aced ASVABs, and pretty much the PCAT (pharmacy test)...I did great on math on the SAT and ACT but used to never read the english part and just picked a good answer. Surprisingly I scored above average still.

I debated being an engineer at first and actually was able to design the fire sprinkler systems of a popular christan colleges new addition and a geriatric center down here. Doing so I climbed my first 30+ foot ladder.

I realized engineering wasn't for me due to having to look up everything and just do it by the book. Prior to my AA degree I was accepted to pharmacy school at UF. I had switched to Biology and Zoology looking to go to med school. Being a doctor would mean not doing much until I was older...(we have a lot of docs in our circle)...so I decided on pharmacy. Interned in it and decided I hated it. About the same time my first wife broke her neck.

I ended up back in banking...stayed in it until 1999. Was able to buy a nice house in the now popular Wellington, Fl area (polo horse deaths). Half acre on a canal, 3/2/2 with pool...I was only 23.

Switched to computer science when I peaked in that gig. Did my BS in a year and a half.

went back to do computer work for a major mortgage company.

I love tools and working on things...I have rebuilt a ton of cars, rooms, boats, etc.

All that said, no I am not rich...I have learned that getting most high paying things is more luck than skill though or being willing to whore yourself. When I say whoring it's not that flashy shiny person in your office, it's the one you don't see and think they are all business.

so just write this shit down ok. If there is anything else you want my take on, let me know and I will provide it. Keep trying to let me know I contradicted myself.

They moved in last night above me and there is constant thumping all day~! I am losing my mind over this. I went upstairs and as soon as they open the door she says "I know what you are going to say"......my thought was "well WTF?!" This CANNOT go on for the entire time they are here. I just moved in myself! A full year of this shit? I fully understand kids are rambunctious and have tons of energy but why not take your kids outside? Let them run and play so we all can be satisfied. I've never had this situation before so I hope after this it doesn't continue.

That's the problem. IT AINT YOUR LAWN.

These people are not inside your apartment, are they? They live ABOVE you. And because of this, you'll just have to deal with it. You cant really do anyhting about this becuase the police will always be on their side, not yours. At least that's how things are here in NYC.

The only case where you'll be right is if they keep disturbing you after 12am. But even then, it's not like they can be arrested or locked up for disturbing your sleep.

A friend of mine had a problem with a loud family that lives above them. So her brother, after taking the abuse for years, and calling the police dozens of times to no result, decided to go over there himself... guess what.. these bastards called the police and told them that the guy was impersonating an officer when he rung the doorbell. The police believed them! Even though he did no such thing. The poor guy got locked up for the whole night and half of the next day until bail was paid. Now he has to pay for lawyers.

Well worth that IMO. Built in forced exercise.

Or get a place that has a elevator.

I've done both in my renting days.

Had a top 3rd floor apartment without an elevator and a top 4th floor with a elevator.

I heard the people who lived on the ceiling
Scream and fight most scarily
Hearing that noise was my first ever feeling
That's how it's been all around me
...
The kids in the halls and the pipes in the walls
Make me noises for company
Long distance callers make long distance calls
And the silence makes me lonely

Is this your first time in an apt. building?
It's par for the course in many.
Depending on the building you will hear it more or hear it less, but if there are kids above you, you are screwed. There is nothing you can do (apart from changing apts. if possible) unless it's at a late hour, etc.

<-- Former buildings manager, I heard this complaint enough times.
