New Neighbor smokes in her apartment

A new neighbor moved in last week, and she smokes in her apartment a lot. You walk in the front door, and the whole hallway just wreaks of smoke. Our apartments are the only two apartments on the first floor, and when I walk into my apartment, it still feels a little musty.

Is this going to damage my health at all? I guess I'm just wondering - how much of the smoke is seeping out of her apartment and into mine? Is there anything I can do, or are there any devices I can get to zap the smoke?
 
She has to be smoking with her door open or in the hallway, else the only place it can be seeping through is through your electrical outlets(maybe an insulator for them) as well as one of those things to go under your door.

Might want to dose thr hallway with lysol as well to see if she gets the point, else just tell her to just smoke inside.

You describe you apt. as "musty", this is usually associated with moisture, not tobacco smoke. While annoying, this situation is not dangerous for you as the amount of exposure is so minimal. If you were in a room with someone chugging down smokes than yes, might want to avoid it but this tiny exposure is negligible.

Anyone suggesting someone should take up smoking, even in jest, is just trolling.

matt, that would really be grounds for me to vacate that apartment. cigarette smoke reaks. she is ruining the carpet, and even the walls in that apartment. it's very difficult to get that smell out of the place.

start looking for a non-smoking place to live.
 
I wonder if you can use 'health risk' to break your lease, or if they are unwilling to let you out of your lease if you can file a suit against them for endangering your health. :biggrin:

BTW, I successfully evicted two neighbors when I resided in my last apartment. Neither of this was the result of smoking, but rather they believed in listening to loud boom-boom music at 3-5AM.

I gave up and bought a house.

I smoke and I agree, it's nasty, never inside though. It's questionable if that would hold up as a reason to break a lease though as the landlord should be given a chance to resolve it first by telling tenant not to smoke in common areas. The carpet and walls ect. are irrelevant to the issue, that's between the other tenant and landlord. as long as OP isn't getting second-hand smoke in his apt. it's none of his business.

Yeah, but when it's seeping into HIS living space, he has a right to bitch.

I'd leave, or hope to god that there is a clause in the lease that said it was a non-smoking building. That's just damaging the property owners property.

Is it illegal in your community to smoke in the apartment?

Is it in violation of the lease/rental agreement for her to smoke in the apartment?

If not, you have 2 choices:

1) Move and hope you find a non-smoking complex. (or a house)
2) Suck it up Buttercup. People do all sorts of things in life that others find offensive.

3. Stop crying on the internet and call the darn landlord and have him/her get a better seal on your neighbors door. You should not be smelling anything through a door.
