New Neighbor smokes in her apartment

That was not really funny.
Anyone suggesting someone should take up smoking, even in jest, is just trolling.

matt, that would really be grounds for me to vacate that apartment. cigarette smoke reaks. she is ruining the carpet, and even the walls in that apartment. it's very difficult to get that smell out of the place.

start looking for a non-smoking place to live.

Seriously, Mosh? Of all the bullshit that flies around here, in L&R, and in P&N, this makes you want to call someone a troll?

I thought it was funny. Especially Quebert's comedian quote.

Lived above an older woman for 2.5 years who was a smoker. She was there before me and there's nothing in the leases about smoking so I just had to put up with it. Wasn't terrible. There was an odor in the hallway, especially if she just opened and closed her door. Also I'd get it wafting up when I opened my patio door during the warmer weather.

From what I experienced I'd say pretty assuredly it's not a health risk. That's not even close to second hand smoke. When I was kid my dad used to smoke. In the car, on long car rides too. And he wouldn't roll the windows down very far. I used to choke on that shit. That is second hand smoke. Just gonna have to de-odorize with something and you won't even notice it.

If it's that smokey. Call the fire department and report a fire from the floor below. That will embarass them.

no. what it will do is piss of the fire department and police. which could lead to him getting arrested or ticketed.

Sometimes it comes in through the heating vents. Depending on how the heating is set up, I guess the cold air returns can suck her smoke into them, and then push it back out into your apartment. My girlfriend has that problem... heater kicks on, and cigarette smoke smells comes out of the vent. Blah. 🙁

You just need to ask your landlord that your neighbor smokes in her apartment. And your landlord should do something about the problem.

I had a similar problem in my apartment. People would hang out in the hallway and smoke. The smoke came right into my apartment through the door - it was like they were smoking inside my place. Ugh. D:

I went to a hardware store and got a door sweep and some weather stripping and installed them on my door. 🙂

Worked out quite well - I can barely smell smoke now when they light up in the hallway. :awe:

For good measure, I also used caulk to seal the gaps between the wall and the floor all over the apartment.

Hopefully this might work for you as well. Good luck!

I hate smokers.
I'm just glad they are dying off at an ever increasing rate.
These younger generations are not picking up the habit, which is great.

I can't wait until second hand smoke becomes chargeable as Assault.

"Third hand" smoke is also a health risk. In fact, it's pretty much best to avoid being around anyone who smokes on a regular basis.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/03/health/research/03smoke.html

From your link, "That’s the term being used to describe the invisible yet toxic brew of gases and particles clinging to smokers’ hair and clothing, not to mention cushions and carpeting, that lingers long after second-hand smoke has cleared from a room. The residue includes heavy metals, carcinogens and even radioactive materials that young children can get on their hands and ingest, especially if they’re crawling or playing on the floor."

If you don't live with a smoker or don't visit one's home and crawl on the carpet your chances of getting cancer from third-hand smoke must be somewhat minimal but in this day and age it gets way overblown..
