Not everything is "A OK" on Sesame Street, brought to you by the letter "A" </a>
😛

Lots of children in South Africa have AIDS.
They got it through no fault of their own.
In addition to having a terminal illness as a child, they are stigmatized for having AIDs.
If you ever worried about having the wrong style of clothing as a kid, imagine this is worse to be picked on about.
If a muppet can help them be more accepted, that is wonderful.

I agree, but perhaps more should be done to change a lifestyle that is obliterating the african population. AIDS is one of those diseases that could be wiped out with in a generation. Sympathize with those that have it already, and those that will get it, but encourage the lifestyle change necessary to prevent future infections.

That would require massive funding from the US and the UN, which would precipitate a chorus of howls from the more conservative segment of our populus. The problem in Africa runs much deeper than encouraging a change in lifestyle could ever hope to fix; you're dealing with a huge landmass, many different languages, no central means of disseminating information, etc. You can't just put a series of health information spots on the nightly news...this is almost a door-to-door undertaking. It's a mess.

not like we care about africa much anyways. why gripe about their aids muppet when they can't even afford aids drugs, not that it matters since that just slows your inevitable death. these kids gonna die, don't bother em😛

You think changing the behavior across the entire continent is in the scope of Sesame Street? I think that what they're doing is positive.

Geez...I just thought it was a funny link. Didn't anybody like it?

My 2 cents: Remember that the South African president (I think) only recently (like this year) admitted that HIV might be the cause of AIDS. That should tell you something about the cultural and political resistance to HIV education over there.

Well, they had Bert and Ernie for long enough, may as well throw an AIDS carrier in too 😛

<--- loved seaseme street. My mother works on that street. ( the name of the street is seaseme street. There was once a 5' tall big bird hanging from a noose stuck on the lampost. Funniest picture I had ever seen. I will see if I can find it )

lifestyle..? Children subjected to sexual molestation/rape(consensual or not..) is now a lifestyle ...? AIDS/HIV is an infectious disease but one that has political support as in that it could have been curtailed(or severely limited) back in the 70s but unlike other diseases was never treated to quarantines or other measures as such. What are the facts is the epidemic in Africa is still spreading wildly and without any major checks to that spread. 🙁

I was under the impression that the more common scenario is that they're born with it...

A lot of the little girls are raped by HIV infected people. IIRC, some believe that having sex with a virgin will help prolong life.

haha...

And here I was expecting an intelligent post from a member of the medical community....

Shouldn't you be golfing or working an extra job to pay for malpractice insurance or something...

Africa's problems are self inflicted. It's as much about politics as any other factor.

The whole continent, for the most part, is in constant turmoil.

Aids could be easily defeated if people had some personal responsibility and were not so selfish. Society tends to stigmatize all carriers of any disease. That's basic self preservation!

The problem is ignorance. The churches that have sway in many African countries prevent the governments from teaching the use of contraceptives.

I'll agree that is part of it, but hardly the major cause. The governments keep the populace ignorant, hungry amd enslaved preventing education. At least the missionaries bring hope and medicine to a populace that have neither!
