New Monitor

Alright, so I'm a gamer, and I've got around $500 to throw around ona new monitor, my current one flickers, and makes me want to stab people. It's been acting funny lately, so I figure it's about to go out. Argh.

I play mostly World of Warcraft, but I also enjoy games like F.E.A.R. and other FPS. However, the vast majority of my gaming time is spent on WoW and other RPG games (Dungeon Siege 2, etc). I haven't played in a while, but I do occasionally spend 10 or so hours a day on Black and White 2 and Civilization 4. Anyhoo...

So I'm really looking to get a widescreen monitor. A friend of mine has a widescreen crt (Trinitron he says), and WoW is widescreen native. I also watch a fair amount of tv/movies on my computer, so I'm curious about the viability of getting a widescreen. I've considered a Dell 2005FPW, but I'm not sure if I could get a better performance CRT. Any ideas? I wouldn't be opposed to getting a 21" or 22" crt that's not widescreen.

So if anyone has reccommendations, I'd like to stay under $500, or very close. And widescreen would be a plus, CRT doesn't bother me, I've been using CRTs forever. I've worn out 5 CRTs in my day. My current is #6 to go out. Any information about the durability of reccommended monitors would be appreciated. Thanks a ton, everyone!

You WILL NOT regret it.

A quite brillient screen.

$500 will buy you a lot of CRT but the shear bulk and awkwardness of a CRT should steer you towards the LCD.

Sony FW900. It can display any resolution from 640x480 to 2304x1440 at some crazy high refresh rates natively. No LCD can do that. 1920x1200 too much for your video card? Get more fps with 1280x800@ 100htz instead.

Right now, I'd say the Viewsonic VP930B, 19" LCD. Beautiful thing.

Can't afford it? Look at the Viewsonic VX924.

Well, I'm really not too crazy about spending more money to get a lcd monitor that doesn't perform as well as a crt. Space just isn't an issue to me. If I get a LCD, I'd really prefer it would be a widescreen. I'd still love to find a widescreen crt.

Yeah sorry, just read the part about widescreen.

CRTs are still good, they have good black levels.

I love my dell 2005fpw, wow player here, no problems with ghosting or backlight bleeding. I recentuly upgraded from a 17 inch crt, immersion level on the 2005fpw blew me away.

My math may be at fault, but I figured $400 shipped would fall below your $500 budget. ($300 if you pick it up instead of having it shipped)

There is no question. Get the dell LCD.

CRT is not worth the space it takes up. I can never go back to CRT after getting my 2405. Never.

The thing with CRTs is that the good ones are only available as used or refurb units these days, so buying one can be quite risky. You could get one that's perfect and far superior to any normal LCD for a bargain price, but you might also end up with a dud with lots of problems and possibly no way to return it. I think at this point LCDs are a safer option because of this. If you want to look at CRTs though, get either a Sony FW900 or a Mitsubishi 2070SB; they both have different strengths but are generally considered the best out there.

Just google for Dell Coupons and you will find plenty of places to look. OR just check AT's Hot Deals forum and watch it for 2005 deals, they are always posted there when they pop.

If you DO go with a 2405, make sure you have a 7800GTX at LEAST for your games. Also, be prepared to upgrade to the highest end card available every single year. By commiting to a 2405, you're commiting to playing all your games in 1920x1200 unless you like horrible upscaling. 1920x1200 is really your only option for everything. Indeed, having a slimmer cabinet would appear to have considerable drawbacks. Also, be weary of each store's policy on dead pixels. When I got my refurbished FW900 I didn't have to worry about it as deal pixels is a problem that only plagues LCD's. The issue is that for most stores, 5 dead pixels is acceptable and is not considered to be a defect. Just make certain you can accept that flaw if you're feeling brave enough to order online.

Oh heck no 2405. I'm not that deep in cash. I was gonna go for the 2005FPW. Where's a good spot to get Sony FW900

Depends on where you live. If it's anywhere near NYC or Boston you are in luck.

the widescreen issue that comes up a lot is a lot of games dont go ws and sometimes makes other applications/movies look a bit strewn across the screen
in my personal opinion, if you like brightness of crt and ergonomics of lcd
go for sony hs95p, the x-brite is amazing, you can dim it during the night so you dont get that glare burn
but during hte day, it is the most ridiculous screens ive ever used
good luck with that
and plus its been out for a while so you might catch a break somewhere
