Actually, Microsoft makes some money when parents buy the cheapest 360 that they can find (no hard drive) for their kids. Then later they find that they must pay dearly for an xbox memory card or two (which have a nice profit margin).

Except large developers are STRONGLY DISCOURAGED (prohibited?) from requiring the harddrive. Only a couple of games require it at the moment.

I think you originally were not allowed to require a HDD originally, but I believe Microsoft lifted this restriction earlier allowing developers to require the HDD. Although I'm not sure if this requirement is just for expediting processes (such as preloading) or for full games or whatever.
