NEW MODEL : HONDA CIVIC SI HATCHBACK - what do you think?

<< I wish they wouldn't have made it a hatchback. If it was a sedan, then I might buy it 🙂 >>

Why don't they just go all the way and make it a gigantic SUV?

It's supposed to be small and light, that's the whole point.

I think it looks great. I love hatchbacks and I've been looking forward to this one for a while. I may end up getting one over the summer if they're available in my area, not sure of how widely available they'll be right off. I just wish Richard Dreyfuss would stop doing the commercials, I'm tired of his voice.

All the Civic Si's, except for the 99-00, traditionally has been all hatchbacks.

Yeah, that was really weird of them. They should have made the hatchback into an Si then too, IMO.

Take note that this new Si engine has a timing chain (insted of the traditional belt), balance shafts, and i-Vtec. At 2 liters, this will be the punchiest Civic engine ever. That timing chain probably keeps it from revving so high though. It only goes up to 6800 rpm, less than an '86 Integra.

The interior of the thing is cool like with the shifter sticking out of the middle of the dashboard a la old VWs, but from the outside, I echo the sentiment that it's ugly and looks not unlike a ZX3.

linky no worky and i don't want to troubleshoot it.

the reason the US got a coupe instead of a hatchback for the last Si is that hatchbacks are considered crap in the US, while coupes are sporty.

They had coupe Si's before 99.

They stopped producing Si hatchbacks though after the 92-style model. Incidentally, this was the most aesthetically pleasing Civic ever. All the others are suck, big time.

<< When do these suckas hit dealerships? >>

They should be arriving now. I sat in one at the Minneapolis auto show on Sunday (Honda had two there), then I drove a Daewoo Lanos (OMG, what an inexcusable POS!) off the convention center floor 😀 and straight back to my friend's Nissan (and Daewoo:frown: ) dealership.

The Civic Si was a bit smaller than one of the many new five-doors arriving from Japan, but I think it goes without saying that almost any hatchback will have a lot more utility than a coupe. The seats are trimmed in a very nice, suede-like material and are stitched with red thread. The leather-wrapped steering wheel was smaller than in a normal Civic. The shifter seemed like it would work very well while driving, and it still had that perfectly crisp, one finger light feel in action that us Honda folks are accustomed to. They had a gold and a silver one at the show, but I bet black, or some other dark color would look much better on the outside. And no, it wasn't tall.

Edit: Oops, I wasn't done.

<< It's alright, but it's so expensive. I love hatchbacks, but I will probably just get the HX coupe instead. >>
