New Logitech G5

I currently use an MX1000, but I am looking to get a wired mouse.

yeah, only if you're an ultra low sensor that needs a 3 foot mouse pad to turn around without lifting the mouse

That's the point, high DPI mice are going to naturally cater to high sensitivity players, thus they perform better when used in such ways, Ichigo would apparently have you believe otherwise.

I have both the MX518 and G5. I think the G5 performs better. First of all the DPI on both are overkill. 2000 DPI is too sensitive as is the 1600 DPI. I use both at 800 DPI. I don't see how setting it to that high of a DPI helps you in gaming. You have to bump up the DPI with a button. Then adjust and target at the higher DPI. Then bump the DPI down again. All that during a game? I don't think so but I'm no pro. I wish they'd come out with something more reasonable say 1200 DPI mouse WITHOUT having to install drivers. I refuse to install drivers for any mice or keyboard. Why do I like the G5 better? It has larger glide pads on the bottom and moves effortlessly. The MX518 extra buttons are nice but I'm old school and prefer the keyboard (backspace and shift+backspace for navigation). The MX518 top surface is slicker and at times feels slippery.

I also have the logitech MX610 wireless. IMHO this is logitech's best shaped mouse and has forward/back buttons as well as volume up/down without having to install drivers. Unfortunately it has latency issue and doesn't always register clicks. If logitech made a corded version of it I would buy it in a heart beat. The MX610 feels much more comfortable than either the MX518 and G5 but not anywhere close in preciseness.

Higher DPI offers a more accurate translation of your hand movement to the cursor movement on screen and is most useful when operating with high screen resolutions. True, at lower resolutions even an 800 DPI mouse can be too much to handle unless you adjust the mouse sensitivity - whether that be through drivers or windows (not recommended) and/or through your games' settings (optimal). I've got two 2000 DPI laser mice and an 1800 DPI optical and generally run them at their highest DPI and adjust the sensitivity down in game.

One of the biggest pluses with my laser mice (Copperhead and Habu) would be their integrated memory that allows me to setup the mouse the way I like and then there is no longer need for the drivers (as long as I have the profiles set up the way I want them and don't want any features that require the drivers)

I'll agree with you that the MX610 is one fantastic mouse. It's my least favourite for gaming, actually (I like slimmer symmetrical shapes for that), but for general usage it's really comfortable and just can't be beat. I've never once had any problems with laggy button or cursor response. It's always been perfect for, except for the times when it picks up some bad interference and flakes out, but that doesn't happen very often. Your problems with it seem kind of strange; you might want to talk to Logitech about that.

And there is indeed a wired version of the MX610, called the MX400. It lacks the email and IM buttons, which is a shame, but everything else on it is identical. I'm surprised you haven't seen it in stores.
