"Leave the World Behind" - 3/10

I really feel bad for the lead actors Julia Roberts, Maherahala Ali and Ethan Hawke being stuck in such a boring movie by M. Night Shyamalan...er...wait....by... Sam Esmail. It is slow paced and a lot of differnt things just thrown together to make a very boring 2 hour and 15 minute movie that ends with a girl watching an episode of "Friends".

The only reason it was not in the movie theater is that it would be a pain to wake up the audience after it was over.

Leave the World Behind - it's complicated/10, but I highly *don't* recommend it

***probably spoilers ahead***

Mrs. Ned & I watched this over the weekend and, speaking on her behalf, we both loved its 1st two hrs. It has everything a really decent movie ought to have - an interesting plot, good acting, creative camera work. The 1st two hours aren't perfect or anything (i.e. how the "teeth" part played out was pretty stupid - why did the kid keep "forging ahead?"), but it was still highly enjoyable - tense, suspenseful, & mysterious. At some point I remember saying that it was the best movie I had seen in a while. I would probably give the 1st two hours 8/10.

Up to the 2 hour point, the movie had sucked us in - it was pretty good. I was practically praying that the filmmakers would stick the landing.

They failed miserably. The problem is that at the 2-hour mark, there are still 20 minutes of film left - and they are really bad. There isn't much of a big twist, or reveal, or anything like that (although that might be exactly what they were trying to do). This was the worst ending possible - instead of providing a reasonable explanation for many of the strange things that had happened up to that point, the movie more or less just runs out of steam and stops. It just ends. It could not have been more anticlimactic. If you were expecting an explanation for the "deer" part, the "red cloud of death" part, or the "cabin in the woods" part (and I'm probably forgetting a few other parts)... well, you're just out of luck. That means that you have to wonder why those parts were in the movie in the first place. In hindsight, you have to conclude that, without the film explaining them, those parts are pretty freaking stupid - they were put in the movie for who knows what reason.

Here's what I'm talking about... While watching the movie, the "deer" scenes were spooky & effectively increased the tension. Looking back, I realize that those scenes had no purpose, deer never behave that way, and the final deer scene with Pretty Woman and the other girl is pure, 100% retardation on full display (yes, I used the offensive, non-pc word because it's the only one that completely fits the situation).

Mrs. Ned and I felt abused by this movie - we were both literally angry and disgusted when it was over. She commented that it was just like watching Lost all over again.

Leave the world behind 6/10

This movie reminds me of Bird Box. I would say the ending is justified coz everything was gone to shit anyway. At least one person got her wish while everything was falling apart all around. I've seen more seemingly pointless movies than this except this movie did kinda have a point. We live in a world where if shit suddenly hits the fan, there's no telling what we will do to each other. The prime example of this was during the COVID era. People panicked and bought every damn thing they could get their hands on. I've never had to wait OUTSIDE a supermarket in a queue before. Never had to see a supermarket's checkout lines fully staffed yet still be unable to get my turn in less than 20 minutes coz everyone was stocking up on processed food items like a nuclear war was imminent and everyone would be sheltered for months. The movie raises some interesting questions on how prepared nations are for doomsday scenarios. Short answer: they aren't.

Ponyo 8/10

I finally watched the last of my 10pack of Studio Ghibli movies.

Cute story of a magic Goldfish (?) that becomes a human girl.
But why was she bigger than any of her goldfish sisters to start with?
(And lets see if user @ponyo comes back to ATOT. Hover over his name...)

Here's the last Studio Ghibli movie I reviewed:

And the one before that:

You can search that thread for my other 7 reviews.

Master animator Hayao Miyazaki came out of retirement and did one more film for Studio Ghibli at age 75 in 2016.
This year at Age 82, The Boy and the Heron was released.
Review coming soon!

Your Name (2016)

Anime. Two teenage kids from different places dream they're in the other person's life for a day at a time. I watched it with English subs and maybe if I understood Japanese then maybe there would have been a better cushion to prepare me for weird shit, so it took me probably a good half an hour to realise what is actually going on rather than what the characters think.

It's a sentimental little boy-meets-girl movie plus some of the usual weird shit that one might expect from a Japanese anime not made by Studio Ghibli. Safe for teenagers to watch IMO (though I am not a parent, YMMV). No cartoonish emoting (e.g. symbols alongside faces) and no absurdly squeaky/whiny female voices.

Not the best or worst anime I've seen. If you and your partner enjoy a bit of anime and want to settle in for a bit of entertainment which isn't going to totally do your head in or scream soft porn, give it a try.

i watched again Pretty Woman - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0100405/reference/

because it dawned on me that both the character played by Richard Gere, and the actor Richard Gere too are really bad. The two most relevant character - and the best acted - are the Concierge (played by Hector Helizondo) and the prostitute Vivian (Julia ROberts).
Gere's character is just crap. Gere's acting is lazy and mediocre. Julia Roberts' character, Vivian, too isn't perfect, it changes through the film from smarter to dumber as it suits the moment.
.. despite these horrible flaws, this is still an absolutely excellent movie, mostly because it's a perfect reimagining of the White Knight story .. which the film itself even fourth-walls at the audience. And it's a GREAT date film.

8/10 for this, and 8.5/10 for Erin Brockovic which also just exists to showcase her talent as an actress, but where everything is made better.

Kleo - German Netflix series, season 1. Season 2 coming next year

This was a kitschy and fun sort of spy thriller/comedy with just wacky characters and some well done sets and visuals. Definitely recommend.

Erin Brockovich - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0195685/reference/

is such a fucking AWESOME film. First off, the story is dynamite. AND it's true.
Everyone involved - Julia Roberts, Albert Finney, even Conchata Ferrel (from 3 1/2 Men) know their place and do not chew the fucking scenery, but letting the script and dialogue do their work and trust in the process.
you just need to watch it.;

8.5/10

google corrected my search to

Scavengers Reign

is that what you're talking about?
arr.
it's got a similar vibe to Nausicaa, and yet it's more Nausicaa than Nausicaa ever was. And it looks like it was drawn by Moebius.

Watched a 40yr old movie I'd never completely finished watching before. Uncommon Valor. Considering the year it was made, it's a good movie 7/10 for the period maybe? Cheesy by today's standards, and the pyrotechnics and other practical effects fall into the cheesy category too.

One of the many films dealing with the POW/MIA issue post Vietnam war. Always enjoyed Tex Cobb movie characters. He was a pro fighter IRL, Heavyweight Kickboxing champ, and they promoted him hard enough in boxing to get pieced up by Larry Holmes as so many fighters that faced the champ did. His Kung Fu kata was hilarious to watch in this film. Dude was an old school tough guy though, respect.

Gene Hackman, Fred Ward, Tim Thomerson, Robert Stack, Patrick Swayze. Also before Sam L Jackson and Morgan Freeman, Harold Sylvester was the go to when casting needed an African American man with good acting chops. He was in some great films like An Officer and a Gentlemen and Vision Quest, among many others. Excellent actor and turns in a good performance here.

Anyways, well worth a watch if like myself, you somehow missed this one all those years.

Candy Cane Lane with Eddie Murphy 5/10. Maybe it is just me, but this movie felt like a paint by numbers Xmas movie designed specifically to hit all the story beats and be added to your yearly holiday watchlist. Maybe why I can't give it a better rating is Eddie's performance was less animated than the CGI characters. He never made me feel like he was scared, terrified, or properly threatened by his potential fate. Flat performance felt flat I guess. His youngest daughter turned in a flat performance too. The rest of the family and cast turned in much better performances.

Barbie 6.5/10. Margot is easy on the eyes. The Canucklehead made me laugh several times. John Cena is an underappreciated comedian. Michael Cera was funny too. Really nothing to dislike about the movie. After all it's another toy property turned into a full length feature film.

All of the "alpha males" raging on it all over social media is much funnier now that I have seen the movie. What a bunch of cunts.

Did the OG Jack Ryan movie marathon. All great films and decent adaptations of the books. 9/10 across the board.

So much better than the new stuff. Perhaps this is an admission of my age, thinking the old stuff is better? I don't care, IMO it is.

Pacing could have been a little better in Clear and Present Danger, but no other complaints. Alec Baldwin did an excellent job in Hunt for Red October. I don 't think anyone but Ford could have kept me from criticizing their interpretation of the character. He always had that Bogart thing. They play a serious character and you immediately take that character seriously, it's a gift for certain.

The Stand min series on Paramount+. 6.5/10 and that's probably generous because of my warm feels for the OG book.

It is more like the revised version of the book he did 10yrs or so after the OG. With updated pop culture references and content. I have a soft spot for the book since it was the first thing by King I ever read growing up. It also inspired Robert R. McCammon's Swan Song which is a serious page turner. I'd love to see a Game of Thrones treatment given to Swan Song, it'd be epic.

My chief complaint is jumping around the timeline. Characters having flashbacks is part of the book, but already being in Boulder so early in the series is horse shit.
