Amazon has the Silver version of the new iPod mini for $242.99 with free shipping. $7 cheaper than what Apple wants for them. The other colors are at $249.

cool but if you use a academic or military discount its cheaper on the apple site. Good deal though. Unless your state has sales tax, as some users brought up below.

I need a gold iPod to match the gold caps on my front teeth. That and a thick 10K gold plated chain to go around my neck.

So regular ipods are too big for the people who want to use these to workout with? IMO mini's aren't worth it

Not a bad deal. If Amazon doesn't charge shipping or tax on the unit, then it's even cheaper than getting it with an education discount.

Amazon's price would be $242.99, while the academic discount price would be $247.89 (includes tax). So you'd be saving about $5.

almost half the volume. its almost half the size.

4.1" height -vs- 3.6"
2.4" width -vs- 2.0"
0.62" thick -vs- 0.5"

ss284 is right, the mini is almost half the volume.

And yes, it's worth it if you can appreciate the portability of the mini, me and some friends had
quite a debate on the new mini.

Definitely not almost half the size and definitely less than half the capacity (4gb -vs- say the 15gb).
However, because the ipod is already pretty small, it's even smaller.

Not worth $250 imo. If I wanted an iPod i'd spend $50 more and get 15gb.

Last I checked volume was 3 dimensional. 6.1 cubic inches compared to 3.6 is pretty close to half the size. From the way you were comparing it, did you actually expect the mini to have 1/8th the volume?

Good point. I was looking forward to the mini but not at that price. It was rumoured to be in the $100-$150 range although now it's clear how apple won't be eating away at their own bottom line at the current price. And the colors? Are they trying to grab the female market or martha stewart fans?
Still I'd pay $50 more and get the 15gb, although lack of an lcd remote and battery life issues keep me from pulling the trigger.

People, if you dont care about the size then this product is not for you. Please stop posting that the 15gb ipod for $50 more is a better deal. Obviously if size is not a factor then it is. But for people whom size is a factor its a viable alternative.

These new IPods use the new IBM 4GB Microdrive inside. These drives are more expensive than regular drives, but you get a size and weight advantage. How many hours of MP3s will 4GB hold? Is that enough? It is up to you whether the size advantage is worth it.

I'm willing to bet that they priced these at $250 so that people considering getting one will probably choose to upgrade to the regular 15GB iPod for "only" $300. This is actually a pretty good strategy by Apple, and should make them quite a bit of money. Of course, those that are interested in a smaller physical size will still get the mini iPod.
