This is awesome! Computer is becoming more of an appliance. Apple's industrial design keeps impressing me. Where is the power supply in this thing?

I guess we'll see copycat version from Dell and HP about a year from now. Dell and HP probably have the first batch already on order so they can deassemble it and copy it.

Hugen - you have a point. But I don't feel that's a laptop I would want to take with me everywhere. 8LBS! That said - neither is the new iMac, so that kinda evens out. Well there you go - this means I guess that if you were in the market for a new machine you won't get an iMac. :)

os x runs fine on 256  iv used it with 192 and was fine. it has an 8x agp but theres no "slot" for it, so you cant just throw in any card you want, theres nowhere for the ports to come out of the case.

Well I checked out the store and there is no option to upgrade the video card, so I'm thinking.. maybe you can't? Could be wrong though.
About OSX on 256MB - I've never used OSX either, but I would imagine that you would want more than that. Especially seeing how only the browser on my PC eats 100MB - should be comparable on Mac I guess.

holy crap, thats horrible. no, its not comparable to the mac side.

Russian - well no. We don't call the old iMac the Cube. The Cube was a separate computer (kinda like SFF) and a fanless design.
The oldest iMac was kinda like the current eMac. And the previous 'new' iMac (i.e. the flower or lamp iMac) was the one with the arm. Yes, I kinda liked that one better too.

the cube was like the first small form factor ever  for some reason everybody wanted a headless imac, which is what a cube is, but nobody bought it :(

Compaq Presario R3000Z

Microsoft(R) Windows(R) XP Home Edition
AMD Athlon(TM) 64 3400+ 2.20 GHz
15.4" WVA WUXGA (1920x1200)
64MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(TM) 4 440 Go +1394 & 5-in-1
256MB DDR SDRAM (1x256MB)
60GB 4200 RPM Hard Drive
8X DVD Drive
54g(TM) Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN !!
Microsoft(R) Works/Money
12 Cell Lithium Ion Battery

$1254 - $100 rebate (I think there is a $25 off coupon for hpshopping.com too)
that leaves $150 to upgrade to an internal dvd burner if you really wanted it.

My basic point why buy an inferior desktop computer, when you could get a laptop for the same price and be able to use it everywhere.

because it wont run mac os x

Wahsapa - hot much does your browser eat with 7-8 tabs open (Flash animations and large images inside). I was thinking that was about norm. Right now Firefox is using 60MB on my system, with only 4 tabs open (1 of which is Gmail which is like 3 lines of text altogether). True that I have a skin loaded. Perhaps that makes a difference?

I've been wondering why does the new iMac look that much better in real-life photos than on Apple's site and I think that the blue backdrop is to blame. Just a quickie - I think it looks much better when allowed to stand out against a neutral background.

On gray - http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/okoto/imac.jpg
Or better yet - comparison between Apple's blue and gray - http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/okoto/imac_compare.jpg

ok so i have 11 tabs in safari open: apple.com, gmail, hardocp, wired, slashdot, albinoblacksheep and a flash loading and the the pictures you just linked to and it comes in a 45mb of ram usage. i think all that would probably be around 70-90mb in firefox  but firefox isnt even at 1.0 release yet so its kinda unfair.

Nice integrated design. It reminds me of the IBM Netvista X Series, which looked simular.

Edit: Nuked the link. Fusetalk kept screwing it up.

The Cube was a compact "professional" PowerMac selling for $1799 and had no expandability (upgradable, yes, but not expandable) which pro customers often need.

If they were to make a headless *iMac* at its real cost, which if it's $1300 with a 17" display, then it would easily be $899 or $999, I think that could be particularly popular among Mac users and the "Mac curious" crowd.

Open up iMovie, load up some clips and transitions, and then open up iDVD. Even 768 MB isn't even enough IMO.

i find that 512 is the minimum you need to run 10.3 well- a gig is just about perfect for anything youd run into in normal usage.

its still a compaq. and the screen is 15" not 17". ever try using a laptop as a desktop replacement? just doesn't work that well without some sorta stand to hold it up. i dunno, most people like keeping desktop/laptop separate. lugging around your only computer tends to be dangerous for your data,.... breaking from spill/loss... also its better to get task specific stuff.. less sacrifices. centrino would be better then a64 for battery life for one. and atleast the laptop screens ive seen, they aren't as bright as desktop even plugged in. and frankly a laptop whereever u put it isn't as elegant a solution. probably noisier to boot.

"The speaker grill [at the bottom edge of the monitor/pc] lets a trio of ultra-quiet blowers draw cool air into the system. These custom heat dissipaters can rotate at speeds as low as a few hundred RPM. Advanced thermal software spins them as fast or slow as needed... the iMac G5 measures less than 25dB when idle (at the same distance of 50cm, a whisper in a quiet room measures more than 30dB). A slit in the back of the case allows heat to rise out the top."

If true, this is quieter than any SFF PC except fanless units such as those from Hush, NiveusMedia, etc. The iMac G5 seems like a clever adaptation and application of notebook technology; surely PC makers could do similar? Now for a review sample. .. Discuss this news in the SPCR forum.

If I wasn't in the market for a notebook (iBook or powerbook of course, nothing else makes sense for me), I'd pick one of these up in a heartbeat.

I'm still tempted to get an iBook; not 100% sure if I REALLY need a laptop right know, though.

I don't need one, but life is better with one. For me, it beats the heck out of paper and a pen while out somewhere. :)

Just can't decide between an iBook (nice to the waller), or a powerbook (fufills the need to be a geek).

Get a Powerbook, I bought mine two months ago and absolutely love it. I tried the iBook, but just didn't like the feel as much as the PB.

I've got one of the original white iBooks, and I definitely liked it, so that wouldn't be a problem. Just not sure if the powerbook is worth the extra money for me or not. I'm definitely waiting until the iBook is updated (should be in a couple weeks) to decide though.

I generally like what I see a lot. Particularly the display. I'm not going to buy any, of course, not with 256MB RAM.

The things I think are wrong with it, is the low RAM, and the way its graphics are presented by apple.
I think FX5200u is quite OK, for the types of uses I imagine for this. 3D content in documents/presentations, 3D- interfaces for work off the clock, and an occasional light game.

Unfortunatly, apple are raving about 3D graphics power, gaming and even present "64MB" video ram as a big deal.
They started off well enough, "From the creators of iPod, the iMac". That's clever! :D

Please be more detailed... I am planning on an iBook myself, so this issue is of my concern as well.

Where did you hear about an upcoming update by Apple? I pretty much heard the other way around.

It's just speculation on my part: It's been a while since the iBook was updated. There is an event in Europe somewhere (Denmark maybe?) Spet 9-14 I think. My guess is that it will be updated then. If not, I think there are a couple of other events coming up. I found a link last week that had buying recommendations for Apple stuff, and the iBook was on their "wait and see" list. ;)
