New HP Printer won't get recognized by old AMDK62 500mhz machine...

We went to CompUSA today and bought the HP 3450 (not sure about 50 it was 34something) and it connected through usb cable...

So we hook up the USB cable from PC to printer when we come home and I know it was hooked up because the lights on the wire were both green.

Then we try and install the drivers and it says it is not recognized.....

I think I know why though and I need help to resolve it---
Its an old AMD-K6-2 500MHZ computer running Windows 98
I formatted the computer about 6 months ago, and I installed the sound card drivers and video card drivers, but I dont think anything else....Should there be some kind of USB drivers that came with the computer too? Can I download them from online somewhere? I think that the USB has no drivers....
And if it IS one of those things where I need the specific name of the motherboard, If I install XP would it work then?

If you're using USB ports that are integrated on the motherboard, be sure to enable them in your BIOS settings. That way, Windows will see them and prompt you for a driver. You'll probably need to go to the website for the manufacturer of your motherboard and download the USB drivers. For example, if your motherboard is based on the Via MVP3 chipset, you'll need the Via 4-in-1 driver package from the Via website. If Windows doesn't prompt you for the drivers, go to control panel, system, device manager, and click on the unrecognized hardware, have disk, and install the driver manually.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you will need to look in Device Manager to be sure your USB ports are in there and clean (no warning marks). There are some USB support updates for Win 98 - get at MS web site. Sometimes there are specific USB drivers for mobo chipsets too - check mobo mfr's site and chipset mfr's site.
. It might also be a good idea to go to Win98SE as the original W98 was kind of shaky - SE definitely has better USB support. You can still find the 98->98SE update CD around the web (or borrow a copy from a friend, <wink, wink>).
I would have picked a Canon too, but that's probably irrelevant here. Just to be sure, it did say on the HP box under "System Requirements" that Win98 was supported, right?

Also, to the the HP support site. If this is a known issue, you can find a fix immediately.

It worked for me while installing a All in One 4110.....
