Wow, it's pretty rare that a flight is overbooked. There's always seating anytime I go on flights. Of course, I don't go on odd hours of the night. These seats are usually saved for the business people, who likes to book at the last minute.

Unless you are going to spend more than a few days, never buy from a site over which you have NO control over airline, departure or arrival times (or even departure or arrival airport for large cities). For short trips, you could actually lose two days (very late departure on outgoing leg, very early departure on returning leg). My strategy is to find the "cheaper" airlines on travelocity for a specific planned trip and then to log on to the airline site directly for even cheaper flights.... :cool:
