well the other service fees you have no idea where they are going, you should either avoid those places OR simply ask politely where are those surcharges going. Good chance is they may not be going to the front of house staff.

I don't like when a restaurant auto charges gratuity unless they specify obviously somewhere. Some places do clearly state they will charge gratuity on parties of 6 or more - that's the most common thing I see and it's not that common. But to just slip in an autogratuity without adequate notice first is not cool.

It's no secret, I lend money to the poor at 35% and take their shit if they default. Job loss...too bad. Cancer...too bad. Spouse died...too bad. Life is bad...too bad. Feck, I think I'm in heaven.

You could stay just because you can get more information than the "media" and other channels here 1st with some discussion.

I'd still like to know a logical reason why server pay should be directly correlated to the cost of my bill. Is delivering a steak any harder than delivering a hamburger? Or is a burger at Disney World really twice as hard to deliver as Burger at Chili's just off property?

Regardless, the day waiters start getting a $15/hr minimum is the day I will stop tipping. There are many harder jobs in the world that pay far less than waiters, and the people that work them don't whine and bitch nearly as much. Plus the whole threat of "your service will suck if you don't tip" is also a load of crap, if service sucks somewhere people will stop going and servers will either get fired or the restaurant will close. Do you really think if management is paying you $15+/hr they are going to let you goof off and piss off customers? Somehow every other job in America gets done without your customer giving you extra cash at the end of the shift.

At least in most states, it is also pretty misleading to clam that waiters make less than minimum wage. If tips don't bring their shift average above minimum wage, the company has to pay the difference. So when you tip at a slow restaurant, you are truly just subsidizing the company not benefiting the waiter.

BTW: I do tip because it is expected and I do think waiters deserve more than the current minimum wage, but I also think it is a pretty stupid social institution and employers should pay their people a fair wage. I also get really sick of hearing all the whiny BS from waiters that make much more than any other person with similar skills, often with far less physical effort.

Have you ever been to a country that has this?? The good waiters get better jobs elsewhere that can afford their talents and the really shitty waiters get paid just like the ones who actually try. Believe me, we do not want this.

This is kind of like communism. Don't take away people's incentives to be good at what they do.

What if we took away tips from strippers?? Then grandma makes the same money as the pretty ones!

You get better service from teenager working the midnight shift at a 7-11 in Japan than you do from 95% of restaurants in the US.

I felt differently about tipping until my most recent vacation to Europe. Tips make a huge difference. Literally every restaurant we visited had horrible service and no one gave a shit that we were out of water for over an hour. I am very low maintenance in restaurants on purpose because I think most people are entitled assholes, but even I was feeling neglected constantly.

I guess I'm not really familiar with 7-11's in east Asia... Maybe the waiters or waitresses don't like you?

90% of the wait staff I get are good.

I guess you had a much different experience than we've had in our trips spanning 11 European countries. Did we run into some inattentiveness? Of course - but we run into that here too despite the supposed benefit that tipping brings. Overall we've never noticed a significant difference and two of those European countries have significantly better service than we typically see in the US. We've been to Ireland 4 times and the service\friendliness of staff there consistently blows the average US experience out of the water despite their lack of tipping. Of course you have to keep in mind that in many pubs you order at the bar, so if you don't know the process you might keep sitting there and wonder why no one is taking your food order or getting you another drink
 
The one thing I can't stand with the whole tipping brigade is people losing simple logic in life. When tips suck, someone is an asshole, or someone simply doesn't have much cash to tip... employers have convinced you to turn around and blame the customer. It's the customer's fault. They are an asshole, they are the reason your wages suck this week.

What should be happening is people should be going to their employer and telling them they aren't getting paid enough for the work they are doing. Increase my wages or I will go to another competitor. Etc... Instead, employers have managed to convince these dumbasses (and plenty of customers as well) that it's 100% on the customer to give you a decent wage.

The problem is, overall being a waiter isn't an amazing skill, so there is plenty of people that can supply the work if the person was to leave.
