New higher minimum wage laws includes waiters. Time to lower tips to 10%?

I felt differently about tipping until my most recent vacation to Europe. Tips make a huge difference. Literally every restaurant we visited had horrible service and no one gave a shit that we were out of water for over an hour. I am very low maintenance in restaurants on purpose because I think most people are entitled assholes, but even I was feeling neglected constantly.

Out of 8 or 9 so trips to Europe I can recall only one specific instance of receiving legitimately poor service, at a somewhat touristy establishment in Paris. Overall I'm usually taken back with how good the service is compared to what I'm used to in the US. Now it is different in style, attitude, and custom but I don't feel that's a negative.

I've never been to 4chan but if your feelings are hurt by me and JS, you're probably in the wrong place.
Just keep polishing that crystal ball. Denigrating people who earned university degrees is very Trump, too. It's quaint.

I've dealt with far more skilled trolls in my time.

4chan is really the place for you. They use all the same messaging there. You won't even need to post.

Even if waiters are earning the $15 minimum wage, it's still minimum wage. If someone is waiting on me, and doing a competent job, I want her to be better compensated than minimum wage.

Here's another wrinkle from RL. We fortuitously arrived at one restaurant which had a special that day, all hamburgers for $5.99. I got my $10 hamburger for $6 that day. On what do I tip?

No one hates tipping more than I do. Pay these guys a real wage and get rid of tips.

Waiters love it because even in states where they make $2.13 an hour, they still can make $200 in an 8 hour shift at any moderately busy restaurant.

I wouldn't pay anyone to pump my gas. I should be able to go order and pick up my food rather than over paying someone for such trivial things.

If I ever see a restaurant with a sign that says something like "Please don't tip," it would instantly become my favorite place. I stick to places that are self serve. No tips expected and none given.

Enjoy those Chinese Buffets

BTW: I don't agree with what you said but I will say you are doing the right thing to support your dislike of tipping

You must miss out on a whole lot of good food

There's a breakfast place I like and if I do the special w/coffee its like $6 and some change. I figure there is a minimum that should be tipped. I usually leave $10.

Which must be 100% voluntary. Any coercion is met with heavy fines.

Got me, I've never worked in a restaurant myself.

But I know many who have or have owned them, anyone with that mindset probably would not be employed long enough to worry about it.

They love the tips because they can hide the majority of it from the tax man. That's a great benefit when you work for tips. I know a bartender who makes $3-400 a night in the summer. I doubt that he's paying much in taxes.

Why, if you fire someone for refusing to participate in a tip pool, the fines could ruin you, we are talking many tens of thousands dollars for a single violation.

They can make $200 in a busy 8 hour shift, but (A) most shifts aren't 8 hours, (B) many aren't busy, and (C) almost everywhere they must split and often pool tips. Besides, the wait staff are my personal representatives for my meal. They (ideally) make sure my order is correct and served hot, and make sure my tea glass never gets empty. Assuming they do their jobs correctly, why wouldn't I want them to earn a good wage?

You are more generous than I, and I'm a good tipper. I don't now remember what I tipped, but it wasn't $10, I'm sure.

Lots of people are bad tippers. We were at a concert last night and I got a $3 Sprite. The two people ahead of me didn't tip at all, and this bartender was a pretty Goth girl with interesting tattoos and piercings, a pretty smile, and miles of very nice cleavage on display. For $5 I got a $3 Sprite, a nice smile, and a nice thank you. That's a bargain. And it's a good investment: If you want your bartenders to be hot Goth chicks with nice tatas - and you know we all do - then we have to make it worth their while to do that job. Otherwise they'll all work at Hot Topic where at least the guys hitting on them aren't drunk.
