OK, so let's say Google Map is good for west coast. But to assist the war on terror, Google changed some roadway names and erased some ramps in NYC.

Google Maps is good and has always been accurate for me... but for the love of god put fucking caching/downloading in so I don't have to be connected and using my data to get to where I want to go!

Seriously... I'm starting to think that Google is colluding with the wireless companies to generate per-byte profits for them.

iGo My Way is decent on Android phone. 🙂 Maps are interchangeable with the GPS machines. Well it's just not free.

My vibrant came with TeleNav, which I haven't used yet. Same software my wife's GPS uses though, so I'm familiar with it. Still, I'd like to see Google be able to cache along the route (with some leeway for unplanned reroutes) for those moments you aren't on your carrier's network.

I agree, it would be nice to set a destination and precache the entire route so I don't have to worry about losing signal if I plan to drive through the mountains or something.

it is kind of funny watching your arrow follow a purple line on a white background tho... 😀

i have an old phone, so i dont have the new bing or the google navigation. best part is, im not restricted to using vzw navigator either. so far.

Haha, it's so much nicer with a phone because you can pull down satellite images AND street view along the way. Now if we could add THOSE to the cache it would be awesome!

this was on my phone, but when i was in the mountains with no signal at all, google maps defaults to a white background. the purple line from the directions is still visible, and the GPS still tracks along where you are, relative to the map. i cant use the new, fancy versions, as my phone doesnt support it. not sure why, except for the sole fact they dont like winmo 6.1

I don't understand. Google Nav on android *does* precache the route. If you go off route then it obviously will need data to re-route, but you don't need data once your route is set.

It's my understanding that only a small amount is cached. I've had one or two times where a long call prevented nav update from occurring, admittedly it's rare and hasn't happened recently.

It didn't miss a beat for your route. For others, it might be a disaster. You think a Brooklyn Bridge missing a ramp is not a problem?
No, not really. It's not used for turn by turn nav in a car. It's google 'maps', not navigation. It can help you navigate, just as a map, but just like a paper map it doesn't talk. 😛

Google Nav is part of Google Maps. And boy howdy is that robotic bitch smoking crack sometimes with her directions.

Never had an issue with Google maps in NC, SC or Virgina. My Garmin has steered me wrong quite a few times though.

This, I used google maps on my old curve 8900 in August for driving directions/walking around/metro for a good solid 4 days. It never skipped a beat.

I miss a lot of things about BBerry OS after going to Android, the email and messaging of the BBerry is still second to none. Android is slowly growing on me though.

I agree with the BB stuff. I went from the Curve to my Droid 1, and while I wouldn't go back to the Curve there are some things that I really miss. BB did some things extremely well:

Call quality- The Curve was the best call quality phone I have ever used. It was great. The Droid sucks (at least mine) comparatively.

BBM- Blackberry Messenger is the best text/IM program I have ever used. I love it. Worked very well, and loved seeing when people read texts and were typing among many other things.

There were others as well, but in summary... I miss my BB for some reasons.

Too bad it'll be replaced on future Verizon Android phones with Verizon Navigator. 🙁

For all above comments on Garmin unit, are you sure you have the latest map update? Don't expect a GPS with 2008 Map will give you the new locations anywhere.

But for Google Map, ironically they have the Brooklyn Bridge ramp shown 2 years ago, but it is removed now. That's what I call a stupid "patriotic" move.

I believe the route itself is cached, but the maps themselves are only cached so far. So if you run out of signal, it will still follow you and tell you where to turn, but it won't have the map display to go with it.
