Click Satellite (upper right).

Newport News, VA 23692 images aren't from this year that's for sure... I know of a very large building that's missing right near the airport - looks like it was as they were prepping the ground for building (ie dirt). So the (C) 2005 notice isn't real accurate.

Ahh, it's just the same old USGS urban area imagery that's been available for years now for free from various locations. It's not even as high res as you can get off the microsoft terraserver site with a little URL hacking.

The google maps interface is cool though with the easy panning around.

Alright, I'll bite - what's the URL hack to get greater zoom at Microsoft's Terra Server?

Changing from s=10 to 12 zoomed out 2 notches. (s the variable for Scale?)
But changing s to 9 didn't zoom in, more.

Hack gone, these days?

Yeah, but the two things I really like about Google Maps are:
- getting driving directions and having the satellite picture with the blue line running through it showing me the route. That's Neat!
- being able to just Cut-and-Paste an entire street address/city/state/zip into one box instead of multiple boxes like Mapquest/Yahoo maps/etc.

It sure looks pretty - I just wish they could figure out how to get it to work as well at mapquest.

I get the wrong directions all the time - and addresses not in their database.

Its a nifty program with a cool feature of dragging and sat. images...but for actual mapping?

I wouldnt trust a google map if I needed to actually get somewhere.

Map to Google

Put in your street address and zipcode & that's it.

(I could see the new brick planter in my neighbor's yard...:camera:

Your lying...either the brick planter isn't new or you couldn't see it. I would assume those satellite images are at least two years old.

You may need to change to a different tileset, and they may not have the same resolution available for your area.

Try hacking your own lat/long into this example URL :

http://terraserver-usa.com/GetImageArea...ge&gc=80808080&fs=8&fc=ffffffff&logo=1

That'll grab a 2000x2000 pixel image (the bigest you can get in a single image) which is great for printing out.

Nice - so if I hack the long/lat coordinate into my GPS guided missile that I happen to have lying around, I can take out my pesky neighbor right?

Yeah, they definitely have the white house digitally edited. I think what they did is "paint" the entire roof of it brown, probably b/c of satellite equipment, snipers, missle launchers, rail guns, force field generators, etc. that are located up there. If you pan to the side, you'll notice that a number of the large buildings near the white house also have "solid color" roofs, and I'm guessing that those roofs may be used for white house protection as well. The US Capitol, which is a bit south-east of the white house is also digitally edited, it's all pixelated, but interestingly IMO the pentagon is not. The pentagon really looks cool on the google map; to find it search for arlington, VA, and then just find the river and the pentagon is right on the river.

CNN Story

So satellite images not available for all locations? I don't even see sat images of the White House like they showed on CNN's web site...

Help me out here if you all could.

When you say "try hacking your own lat/long into this example" just exactly where would you place/replace the Lat/Long coordinates to obtain a more detailed picture (if available)???

I ask because in the example above, the words "lat" and "lon" appear several times in your link, and, both "lat" stay the same while the two "lon" are different....

Thank you!

OK, simpler URL - I basically cut out everything but the essentials to make it more obvious :

http://terraserver-usa.com/GetImage...&lat=47.64468123&t=4&s=8&w=2000&h=2000&logo=1
