Wow, makes you wonder how any next-gen aircraft can top that.

At 2:46 it looks like he stalled/spun on purpose and was back out of it in seconds.

China has a plane in development. Should be ready in 10 years.

Russia already makes airplanes that are fast and much more maneuverable. However, that's not what makes the F-22 dominant. If you have to fly that low and slow to perform these crazy moves you're already dead. It will still be a very long time until China and Russia can match the total package, which is amazing considering the project was started 20 years ago.

If you are talking about the Cobra manuver, that feat was possible due to thrust vectoring. The raptor has that, so I would argue that any Russian plane is EDIT: NOT more maneuverable at this point.

Fantastic!
None, but it will excel at demolishing schools and hospitals :)

Politics and News is where your post belongs. You're taking political cheapshots and you know it.

The Su-27 can do a cobra with no thrust vectoring.

The real questions about the newest Russian planes is if they'll ever get produced (doesn't seem likely imo) and just how stealthy they are (or aren't). The U.S. has/had about a 10 year lead in stealth technology.

I think the new Russian planes will be produced.

Russia is trying to boost their military. Their economy is growing so I don't see it as a problem.

Also China wants nice new Russian airplanes. Same with India and the possibly even the Middle East.

You cannot compare fantasy to reality. You can state as many "coulda, shoulda, woulda" scenarios as you'd like, but the simple fact is that they don't. Until they do, there is nothing to talk about.

You're comparing a current, operational aircraft with an aircraft that "should" be ready in a decade. What kind of argument is that?

It's possible, but it doesn't look like anyone is going to buy either the Su-37 or the MiG-35/1.42.

both those planes are hardly 'next gen' as they share the same airframe with the su-27 give or take thrust vectoring and canards.

If they couldn't/wouldn't build them because of funding, it seems unlikely they'll build the the true "5th generation" fighter.

Maybe they will, but it'll be even more expensive than either the Su-37 or MiG-35. And we've no way of knowing how stealthy it might be.

Russia has a large fleet of Mig-31. They are expensive to maintain just like the F-14.
It is a nice aircraft, but not worth it to maintain.

Russia and India are closely working together to build a 5th generation aircraft.
India will probably fund it. Russia will build it.

I think China has this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mikoyan_Project_1.44

I've seen pictures of a Chinese "made" aircraft that looks 100% identical to that. Of course the aircraft is in "testing".

(ok maybe not 100% identical)

All this fancy maneuver is great for air show, but it's all about seeing your enemy first and shoot him first then get the heck out of there, the F-22 should do well in that role. If future wars are anything like the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the F-22 has no role, where as the propeller-driven, extremely slow, and unmanned Predators will be much more valuable.

Chris Dodd in the presidential debate tonight made reference to the F-22 program as wasteful...
Any comments on this?

well thats fine to say now. you don't know what you'll need in the next conflict. you should have both or maybe look like an ass when you need an f22 against some rogue state with upgraded russian jets.

He won't be saying that when aliens invade.

Once we give them them a virus to take down their shields, all we need are F-18 hornets. F-22 == wasteful!

I think pork-barrel politicians in general are wasteful. As a matter of fact, let us cut some political jobs and build more Raptors.

Let's start with anyone whose job title contains two or more of the following: "undersecretary," "deputy," "associate," or "assistant." :)
