monetary penalties are meaningless. the NFL poops gold these days, particularly the top teams. i don't know what the by-laws allow, but overturning the results of completed 2007 games (just the one) and exclusion from league play sure would do some damage, F1 style.

wtf, i don't get WHY this is against the rules? it would be alot mroe fun if every team did this! i mean, frig, they're telling us what we can't look at now? if the idiot other team makes obvious signals, it's their own fault. i hate alot of our society right now....

You clearly have no understanding of what actually happened.

I hope they just find someone that sits in the front row of the 50 yard line that will do it for them now.

Does anyone realize that stealing the signs is NOT against the rules ... what was against the rules was there was a camera on the FIELD. If it was someone in the stands, or up in the owners box or whatever, that's fine - the fact was the guy was on the field. What they did by stealing signs is not an uncommon thing ...

No where close to enough. For all we know they have been doing it for the length of their dynasty. It is not that hard to beat a team when you and your defense know what play(s) they are running.

This is ridiculous - they should invalidate all wins that have occurred during this cheating. They need to take away Super Bowls, they need to take away records, they need to strike everything.

That would be overboard imo. They don't do that in baseball, basketball, or hockey as far as I know. Maybe Olympics and cycling they do it because of doping?

what? you can't have a camera on the field? well, i'd say that validates my point rather then breaks it down... lol

If you really want to get the point across, ban them from the playoffs.

Exactly - at the end of the year everyone in the AFC moves up one spot as though NE wasn't even there.

You do realize that all of the other teams also try and steal the other teams signs. Read the links that I've provided in the other thread where Mike Shanahan admits hiring lip readers that have helped him learn the other teams plays by the end of the first quarter. Take their Super Bowl win too?

If the rules say no lip readers on the payroll, then yest they lose their SB win too.

The NFL could take a page from racing. The punishment was so severe that other racing teams will think twice about cheating.

This punishment was a joke.

Stealing signs is not illegal but using video is? Sounds like a stupid rule to me and should have led to a fine at most. The punishment was too harsh.

Why bother having a rule if you don't hold people to it. Why should the Jets have a loss on thier record when NE broke the rules? Would it have been fair if NY played with 25 defenders all game and didn't get caught until after the game? I bet you NE would have lost if NY had been able to do that. Should the outcome have been invalidated under that cheat?

Whose to say the effect recording the signs had on the outcome of the game and all other games where they cheated? Was it enough to change the winner?

You don't know what the effect of recording those signs is. What would you say if based on years of recording other team's signs, NE was able to draft a playbook for most coaches/teams in the NFL/AFC/division based on audibles and calls? To the point where they were almost guaranteed those wins since they knew a good percentage of the time what the other team was about to do.

If that is true, then the fine seems pretty small.

I've got to disagree with you. The Patriots have been an excellent team lately and they deserve their rings. I think that banning them from the playoffs would be extremely effective, but it would never happen. First of all, it's probably too strict, but that's debatable. Most importantly, it would take away a lot of fans, and therefore money, from the NFL. It's just not going to happen.

You do know that the video camera was confiscated within the first ten minutes of the game right? The video camera was taken away before being handed or viewed by any Patriot coach. Yet the Pats blew the Jets out in the second half.

Sorry but if you read or listen to any sports about the camera is that it's used for review after the game. Instead the Pats and every other team in the league have other staff watching and chartering the signals to read the plays.

You do know that once a cheater always a cheater. So they could have been doing this for years and losing 3 quarters of data really had little to no affect on them.

So why are you in the thread? When people are talking about the latest episode of Reality Show 23 in private at work, do you bust into their office, ask them why they're talking about something so pedestrian and below you, and then bolt out again with a feeling of superiority for making them feel irrelevant?

You seriously need to educate yourself on the subject.

If that's the case, how is that going to help them when team's defensive coaches change their signals every week? http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c...heating.nfl/index.html

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.c.../01/09/life_of_reilly/

"It's no rumor, pal. "Our guy keeps a pair of binoculars on their signal-callers every game," says Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. "With any luck, we have their defensive signals figured out by halftime. Sometimes, by the end of the first quarter."
