New:

You think the 4.2K is worth it to get a new car?

edit: someone offered more for the used car....so they gave it them.

Depends on how well the used one was taken care of.

Also can you talk down the dealer/used car?

Depends how much you want the upgraded features. The 05 S has a manual transmission, upgraded brakes and suspension, sunroof, and probably other upgrades. The LE is a pretty basic trim, probably with an auto.

If you're looking for just a good A to B car, go with the new one. If you want something more fun/sportier, go with the used S, as long as it's in good condition.

Interesting, the LE in Canada comes with Auto Climate control + Smartkey

I don't think the S had upgraded brakes/suspension.. XRS was the one with that IIRC

New ones are safer (more standard safety features)

I'm not really sure of the overall features of the different trim levels though

Neither. 10.5k for an econobox with 50k miles is like cutting me with a blade and pouring lemon juice on it. Paying $15k for an econobox with no miles is even worse. I can't even in good faith choose one over the other, both are way too much money for what you're getting in this market. A guy on the forums recently bought an 08 fusion with less than 10k miles for the price of what you're considering to spend on a 2005 econobox with 50k on it. Don't believe the hype about toyota; it is better than most other brands but it can and will have issues, just as any mechanical object will.

i'd say go for the new, its only a bit more, and you get to break it in yourself, the way you want it.
you also get to keep a record of maintenance, and know more about the early years of the car.

i think S is just the body kit/visual tweaks

if i were you i'd find something other than a corolla. you can get some great stuff for those prices, and the corolla drives like total ASS

My mistake...you're correct that only the XRS has the upgraded brakes/suspension. However, I have read that the handling is pretty sloppy in the current generation, so the 05 may actually be a better handling car than the new Corolla.

So now that I look at it, the 05 looks overpriced for that mileage. The new Corolla at $14.8K would be a good price in Canada, but maybe not in the US.

It's used after the first drive. We're not talking about a tampon here, it's ok that somebody else has used it before.

I'd go with the used '05 model. Have it inspected first, and, see what you can learn about its previous owner.

just get the new one, withthe tax write off this year and the lower interest rate, you won't be saving that much going used.

you can write off a new car purchase?

Anyways...someone put in a higher offer at the last minute for teh used car when we were on our way to sign the papers. She still does not know if she wants a new car, but at 14.8 K, it is tempting.

I purchased a 2006 Corolla S with 27k miles on it for $11.5k about 7 months ago. The "S" trim is just the body kit, almost nothing else. Mine has a sunroof and MT.

Drives just fine, I can get 33mpg (70/30 city/hwy) with it when it's warm outside, 30mpg when it's cold. Inexpensive car to own.

Personally, I'd nab the new car but if you do your own oil changes beware that the new models don't use traditional oil filters anymore.

If you decide to go with the used, go to penfed.org, donate $20 to a charity, keep $5 in a checking acct and you can get a 3.99% loan on that used car (assuming your credit doesn't suck).

thing is....it is over priced. But the market dictates what you pay and 10.5K for hethat is, unfortunately, the low end. Everywhere else has that car for 12K-13K w/o the sunroof.

The S does have the upgraded suspension it it handles better than the LE, but not better than a Civic or 3.

Also, to whoever said it, handling is not sloppy, it's just...well....it effortless. The steering is so light, that it feels overcompensated at times.

I would get either a low miles Mazda 6 or Ford Fusion. You can get both of these cars in 07 and 08 low miles (well under 30k) for much less than 14k. As a matter of fact, you may be able to get a steal for around 10k or 11k just like some people on the forums did. Just do your research.
Mazda 6 or Ford Fusion equals to a complete different class of a car than the subcompact Corolla or Civic.

I remember about a year and half ago before the gas prices went crazy, I priced out a Corolla at CarsDirect and it was like $11.5k. Granted it was a base car but who buys options on an economy car?

I'll never buy another new car if I can help it. But buying 4 yr old corolla for $10.5k is totally insane.
