My friend, well not really (I don't actually like him very much :p) is building a computer for the first time, he is a Junior in high school. He got advice from another good friend who is pretty knowledgable with computers. Here are the specs, but they didn't give me specifics, tell me what you think:

CPU: AMD64 3500+ 90nm
Mobo: Not sure what brand, probably Asus, nforce4 SLI
RAM: 1GB DDR400 $250 performance RAM
Graphics card: 1 6800Ultra PCI-e
PSU: $160 600watt Enermax
Case: Thermaltake Tsunami
PCI cards: Sound card (they haven't decided yet) and a TV Tuner
HD: Two 74GB Raptors in RAID
Optical: NEC 3520 and DVD/CD burner combo
There might be some other stuff I'm forgetting

Total: $2200, no monitor

Is it just me or is he stupid for spending $2200 on a computer with only a A64 3500+ and a single 6800U? I mean he's pretty much choosing hard drive speed over CPU. Alll he wants to do is to have the fastest load times at LAN parties, though a lot of it is CPU dependent. His parents have too much money on their hands, his dad is an anesthesiologist, they have a ~40" projection HDTV on their main floor and a 60" in their basement....

600 watt psu??? wtf....some people never learn....and why two raptors? seriously what's the point? A lot of that looks like a waste to me...

edit: why not go with a 480 watt psu....use one raptor for gaming...and get a normal cheaper HD for bulk storage...I'm not a fan of spending a ton of money on cases either...

haha...in that case..tell him that the case is over-rated...all the 'l337 hax0rs' use old cardboard boxes to put their 'sick rigs' in...

Wow, when I was a Junior in high school my car didn't cost as much as his computer is going to cost...

He's deffinetly wating money. Get some valuse ram for 120, smaller psu for 100, one 160gb 7200 rpm drive, and use the saved 480 dollars for another 6800 ultra or nice lcd monitor.

Man, what's up with all the case bashing? lol, he's getting the same case I have. But to tell the truth, I tried to convince him to get something else because I not that happy with the quality of it.

Dude, he's spending $2200 on just the computer, his parents are going to give him some more later to buy a Dell 2001FP. I'm really starting to hate this kid. :D

Yeah, I've got that case too. No window.

Care to tell me what, exactly, is so over-the-top outrageous crazy about it?

While you're at it, I ran out of toilet paper and need a $20 bill to wipe my ass with. You think you can spare one or two?
