My friend, well not really (I don't actually like him very much
) is building a computer for the first time, he is a Junior in high school. He got advice from another good friend who is pretty knowledgable with computers. Here are the specs, but they didn't give me specifics, tell me what you think:
CPU: AMD64 3500+ 90nm
Mobo: Not sure what brand, probably Asus, nforce4 SLI
RAM: 1GB DDR400 $250 performance RAM
Graphics card: 1 6800Ultra PCI-e
PSU: $160 600watt Enermax
Case: Thermaltake Tsunami
PCI cards: Sound card (they haven't decided yet) and a TV Tuner
HD: Two 74GB Raptors in RAID
Optical: NEC 3520 and DVD/CD burner combo
There might be some other stuff I'm forgetting
Total: $2200, no monitor
Is it just me or is he stupid for spending $2200 on a computer with only a A64 3500+ and a single 6800U? I mean he's pretty much choosing hard drive speed over CPU. Alll he wants to do is to have the fastest load times at LAN parties, though a lot of it is CPU dependent. His parents have too much money on their hands, his dad is an anesthesiologist, they have a ~40" projection HDTV on their main floor and a 60" in their basement....
