New Castlevania from Kojima

Wow, looks more like God of War or Devil May Cry than Castlevania which IMO is a good thing. The 2D games are great, but the series really does need an advancement in technology to stay fresh and appealing to people other than those that are fans already.

Looks pretty slick...but I'm kind of cautiously pessimistic considering all of the 3D Castlevania games up to and including CV: Judgement have been kind of a flop. Which reminds me, I still need to finish CV:LoI and CV:CoD (bought them a long time ago just to round out my collection).

Lament of Innocence got decent reviews and Curse of Darkness did ok.

woah. okay, the voice talent, the visual presentation, and Kojima... game looks wicked.
hope it ends up being as fun as it looks. God of War III and this game in the same year. Controller is going to get abused if this ends up playing anything like the action style of the GoW series. And on that note... I want Heavenly Sword 2.

Based purely on speculation from the trailer, it's almost a complete GoW ripoff. There's nothing castlevania-y about it but the whip.

I'm not a big fan of the 3d brawlers anyway. I guess I'm cautiously optimistic.

That's a very good thing for us 360 owners, if it's a GOOD ripoff anyway.

We'll see. I have yet to play a 3D Castlevania that was remotely close to the quality of the 2D games... especially those in the same vein as SotN.

This got me so hyped! And Patrick Stewart and Natascha McElhone!! (though they misspelled her name in the trailer... unless that's not her 😉). 2010 couldn't feel further away 🙁

SotN was the last good Castlevania game...heck, for me at least it was the best of the series.

Someone elsewhere made a possibly sobering observation: MercurySteam is apparently the dev team of record for this, going off the trailer, and they've only done two projects before this--American McGee's Scrapland and Clive Barker's Jericho.

SotN is generally considered a genre-level classic, though. While I'd love to hope for this to be anywhere nearly as iconic, well...

The GBA ones were pretty good, and the DS ones are on the same level, I hear. They are 2D side-scrollers in the same vein as SoTN.

But, the 3D, "next-gen" Castlevanias have been atrocious. I had one of the PS2 ones...Lament of Innocence I think. I played it for like five hours before I traded it in.

I've heard the N64 ones were dreadful as well, but I never had the "pleasure" of playing those. 😉

Here is the announcement of Castlevania from yesterday. They're calling it a rebirth of the series. "A fresh and radical reimagining that is not constrained by what has happened before."

According to Joystiq, this game was announced by Konami last year--as Lords of Shadow--it just wasn't Castlevania yet.

That explains why I found a teaser for this from October 2008 on YouTube.
