Is it true that you shouldn't drive a new car over 65mph for the first 500 miles?

if so... why? what will happen if you do?

You increase your risk of receiving a speeding ticket.

breaking in the engine properly will let the rings seat correctly decreasing the chance of the car burning oil and losing compression later in life.. don't drive it at a constant speed, but vary the rpms and don't rev too high or drive too fast...

Yeah, they already did that for you at the dealership.

Your car and wallet will thank yourself later. I always had that thought run through my head every time I ponder buying a new car. I mean, how I buy a WRX and not want to mash the gas. Then it occurred to me, just let me folks drive it for the break-in period. Problem solved :D

OK the manual of most cars is pretty well written these days. You will find lots of great info in there. The salesperson is a schmuck if he didn't at least give the manual 15 seconds of mention while he was delivering the car to you.

What the manual will tell you is in the first 500 to 1000 miles, not to go one speed for a long time, and not to rev too high. If you keep to legal speeds, you'll be perfectly fine, unless the manual tells you otherwise. Basically, you should drive gently, and don't use the cruise control for more than a few minutes at a time. If you do need to drive on a long trip, let off the gas for a few seconds from time to time. New engines like to have a little tiny bit of oil sucked past their rings to help them get in the groove, so to speak.

keeping my new baby under 65 isn't going to be easy
Why on earth would driving under/over a certain speed have any effect on the engine? Driving 20mph at 6000rpm during the break-in period is more harmful than driving over 65mph at 2500rpm. For all intents and purposes, the break-in period limitations are for the engine revs not car speed. The engine doesn't give a crap how fast you're driving.

Like Garfang said, just vary your speed (and thus engine rpm) and take it easy on the gas pedal, and you'll be fine.

this is what i heard.
1. you don't want to drive at steady speed, pump the gas every now and then.
2. don't go too fast, i guess anything under 75 is cool.
3. don't get in an accident, you'd want to kill yourself :D
