What do you guys think? I still haven't paid for it yet. I am going to be paying in cash this weekend after I drive it a bit and make sure it's what I want. I know I'd be a dick to back out, but this is my hard earned money we're talkin here.

Well, not to be a prick, but I pulled the follwing straight from the auction: "Please remember that you are bidding to "PURCHASE" this vehicle, not to win the auction, and then test drive this vehicle to see if you actually want it or not."

It's a smooth looking car, and I'm hoping you like it and it's not an issue, but it really is a dick move to back out with since the auction description is very clear about thie car and terms.

Yes, my friend is a mechanic and he is driving me up to look at and purchase the vehicle. I sincerely hope everything is OK with the car, and I just happened to pick it up at that price because I stalk good deals. "

Did I miss something here? I mean did you not already buy the car by being the successfull high bidder on the dealer's auction?

I'm aware of this... but I don't care. I'm not giving away my hard earned money here. I talked to the guy and he explained things to me in great detail. Now let me get this straight... I do intend to purchase the vehicle. My mechanic is going to check everything out for me and make sure it's up to speed. I'm not just going to give my money away here... It's basically a fail safe. I intend to purchase, but if it's a terrible buy I will back out and probably offer to pay his ebay fees.

You're kidding me.. I wouldn't drive anything under $5k cross-country without having every nut and bolt checked first. Of course, I'd never make such a small investment on such an important machine either, but TETO (to each their own). 😛

You're naive. I've done more LONG-distance road trips than I can count, and they've always been in cheap cars ($1500, $500, $1500 respectively). Heck, I drove 14,000 miles in a month-long tour of the country, with the $1500 VW Golf...

Granted, if you don't know anything about cars, you're better off making sure someone looks it over first. But it's just ridiculously stupid to say that under $5k is automatically unreliable. Price and reliability are only loosely connected.

Christ, what a bunch of tools. ANY car over a few years old with any miles on it "needs work". Hell, even most wondrous Japanese cars need a damn timing belt replaced as prescribed in the owner's manual. Are they immune from tire wear, belts, hoses, brakes, batteries, fluid changes and exhaust replacement?

Buy a car with a solid foundation, a full framed, V8 propelled, RWD is certainly a good start, fix what's broke or worn, and drive the damn thing. If it's truly a solid machine, it'll get the job done day after day, year after year.

I will never buy a car that is built by Ford
Damn, we have more fvckin' pinheads around here...

My Ford was purchased 5 years used in 1982, and sold still running in 2002 with only normal wear items replaced over the decades.

Hell, I'd get it just to have a second car

My dad just got a 2005 Cartier, so he gave me his 1999.

🙂 I like Lincolns. Not for every day driving, cause i like stick shift.

But the OP got a nice car.

Thank you Karen, and Onery. Fight to power -- against the japanese fanboys of course. 😉

I'm pretty sure with eBay motors you're not obligated to buy it if there's a problem with the car.

Invest in a decent OBD II code reader and see why the light is on yourself. It may just be a simple error code and can be cleared out or a sensor. Other then that it looks to be a really nice car and I wouldnt think your going to have much trouble.

lol at questions asked in auction:
Q: Hi- Are we discussing the air suspension system airbags here or the impact airbags? - I know that this model of car has a reputation for airride system...more
Mar-15-06
A: There is a picture of a stick figure in a seat , with a round light flashing.

Q: besides the air bag light, any other mechanical problems? I realize you havent had it checked out but what's the condition on the engine, tranny, brak...more
Mar-14-06
A: How would I know if I have not checked it out?

Q: due the air bag work at all
Mar-14-06
A: I am not going to crash it to see if it works.

VERY NICE car. one of my cousins has one with 160k miles. white as well. And they love the air suspension. I believe they had some work done to get it fixed up as it wouldnt engage every time.

also they seem to love the northstar v8's

Good Advice, Funboy! I believe I will do that. BTW, I love your new firebird. Sweet ride and an awesome deal.

That IS a beautiful car. I always wanted one of those when I was a kid 🙂

I just hope that it doesn't need a new motor, transmission, or anything expensive like that. Hell, even replacing the airbag will be expensive.

Still, the going rate for that car on autotrader.com is around $4,000 around where I live. You got yourself a deal!

Congrats. Now you just need to rice that baby out!! Get a scoop and a spoiler on it and it will look swwweeeeeeettt.

Edit: Who's the dick that says you cant get a nice reliable car for under 2k?

*raises hand*

Would you take that thing on a cross country road trip? I sure as hell wouldn't.

I rest my case.

Edit: "What part of "Needs work , As Is dont you understand.THIS CAR NEEDS WORK. "

Read the eBay ad. They admit it needs work.

What is your occupation? What is your annual salary? What is you net worth? What do you drive?

I love how you put down all the "common follk" constnantly, so I just want a little insight into who you are.

I invented the wheel, I collect royalties everytime someone drives their car.

I kid I kid.

I am not putting down this guy or his car, believe me, I'm not. I'm just saying, you cannot find a "reliable" car, per my definition, for that price.

Hey, you gotta drive what you gotta drive. Everyone pays their dues in some way.

I'm just saying, don't order Coca Cola and act like it's a glass of Louis XIII. Maybe I'm a jerk, sorry if I am, don't mean to be, but some of you guys just get waaaay too excited over cars most people would be a bit embarrassed to drive.

Have you ever driven a Mark VIII?

If not then STFU.

-edit- maybe I'm a jerk, but some of you guys get way too worked up over drooling over other men that most people would pass over and have a woman instead.

You are a prick. That must've been said like 20 times thus far. You don't seem to understand the power of perspective. I am a 20 year old college student that barely sqeezes by each week. I've been living on my own since I was 18 and trust me... life isn't easy. I don't make enough money each week with my pay to support myself. I have to play poker to subsidize my income, and I can't do it the way most people play. I have to grind, and I mean seriously GRIND it out because I don't have the proper bankroll.

I am currently driving an 89 Mitsubishi Galant, with more problems then you have fingers and toes. To me this vehicle (without looking at it yet) appears to be Louis XIII when I was previously drinking cesspool water. Yeah, it's that serious. Besides it appears to be an awesome deal. $1600... I think if I sold locally right after purchasing I could get double that.

Anyway, I'm sorry I haven't been spoon fed and have mommy and daddy give me everything. I bet you've never lived paycheck to paycheck and have no idea what it's like to hustle your way through school. I am not criticizing you, but you seriously NEED to live that way for a while to gain some perspective.

BTW, I don't think many people would be embarrassed to drive the Mark VIII. Based on the pictures the body is stunning. It really does appear to be a clean, nice looking vehicle. The fact that I'm scooping it up for 1600 is more of a bargain and getting kind of lucky then anything. Here is the exact vehicle I bought listed on autotrader:

Honestly, if you're embarrassed to drive that you're an ass.
