I just finished a new Q9650, the cpu temp is running around 40/35/37/34. Does this sound normal?
I have it in an antec P182 with an actic freezer 7 on it.
 
Sounds kinda high. I have my q9400 oc to 3.75ghz idle temps 29 29 27 29. Is you cpu overclocked? My first guess is your not getting enough airflow in your case. Your using quality thermal paste and not too much?
 
I forgot to mention I had trouble mounting the cooler with the stupid pins, I might order one of those thermaltake mounting kits. I used the pre-installed paste from the cooler, I believe I will need to take it off and remount it. This will have to wait the temp doesn't sound alarmingly high does it?
 
Just assuming that everyone has air conditioning and keeps temps 76-78f. 95% of population. Suppose there was a 3-4f difference that is a little over 1c. Not really relevant in this situation. Thanks.

Actually, ambient temps, heatsink brand and fans will have a HUGE effect on temps and you really can't cross-compare.
 
I am not trying to compare his temps with my chip. Of course temps will be different. I am using a totally different (and better) heatsink. I have 4 intake fans and 4 exhaust fans in my case. Im just giving my opinion on what I think the temps should be on a 45nm quad with a decent heatsink. Just call it an educated guess.
I never claimed to be all knowing computer master but definitely not a noob.

 
Ambient case temps are a HUGE factor. I can have my house set to 60F and if my case is sealed tight, my temps on the CPU will be extremely high because there is no airflow through the case.

Furthermore, ALL setups are different. Different hardware will run at different temps, different motherboards and power supplies will supply different voltages and etc. All of this will affect temps, so aside from a guess, it's hard to comment about temps because there are simply too many variables.

Lastly, idle temps don't really mean much and the onboard CPU sensors are not designed to report idle temps anyway. Load the CPU up with a typical "test" program and let us know those results. That will tell more than anything, if there is an issue.
