New build temp ?

Sorry about the screw up AGAIN. Anyway I got a new build with cd2 6300, intel mb and ac 7 cooler. After running orthos for 15 min of so my temps show 60 c.
Measuring with core temp. Soes this sound to high? Should I reseat the cooler?

Seems a bit high for an 6300 and AC7.

Perhaps you received one of the Core2's with a concave heatspreader?

Could be. I not sure I've got cooler seated properly. This is my first build, and that was the one thing I was concerned about getting right. I may just pull it off and clean it up and reapply artic silver.

When removing the hsf, wiggle it before pulling it out to break the seal;otherwise the cpu may come out with it!

Alrighty then, I pulled the heatsink and cleaned everything up really well.
This time I tried the rice grain size blob and smushed the heatsink to spread it like the As5 site shows. The first time I did the same size blob and spread it with credit card. It appeared to be fairly evenly spread when I disassembled it. Originally the temps (according to core temp) where 41 idle, 60 after 15 min of orthos. Now they are 42 idle,
and got up to 62 after 20 min of orthos. (still 60 after 15 min). Any more suggestions? What is max temp for E6300? Any advice is gretly appreciated.

I think your heatsink isnt seatted very well. Did u make sure u felt the CLICK when you pressed the 4 pins on the board? ive noticed Intel boards are a PITA to mount the heatsink once the board is already inside the case. Its easier to mount the sink b4 u drop the board.

If that didnt work, then you have to undergo option number 2. Go out to a hardware store and get 1200Grit Sand paper. Lay the cpu on top of the paper and try to even the IHS as flat as possible. This will probably take about 45 min with 1200 grit paper, but do it slowly and do it in 1 direction first. But if you want a aprox temp on a C2D with a Freezer 7, u shouldnt be breaking 30-40C on idle and no higher then 50C on full load.

Also are you working with negitive airflow? or positive airflow? i noticed the freezer7 works better in a + enviorment.

It probably has a concave lid. This is V common with the new Intel chips. If you Google it, you will find threads all over the place discussing it.

We built two identical machines for a guy in Vegas, just before football season -- shortly after C2Ds came out -- and one was running 20º C hotter than the other. This 'concave lid' situation didn't start cropping up in the forums, until sometime later. Otherwise I would have RMA'ed the hot chip immediately.

Anyway, that's the first thing I would check... 😉

Thanks for the reply guys, I have remounted the cooler a couple of different times and I
did hear the pins click as they engaged. Yes It was a big PITA while the MB was in the
case.

I was considering lapping the coolersink because it is kinda rough. Being a noob I could't figure a way to keep the mounting bracket out of the way. I had the bracket pushed up (but not completely out of the way) but no way to completely remove it due to mounting pins and I didn't see away to remove the pins so I could slide bracket between sink and fins.

I'm a little nervous about messing with the heatspreader but it does sound like that may be my best option to cool this beast down. Thanks for the input, I'll give a shot and let you know what happens (if I don't screw up and render it useless).

I strongly suggest you that you install the stock cpu fan with mother outside the case, after installing it, turn the MB around and check all 4 pins (black pins must be all the way through the middle of the outer transparent peks). The fan can feel rock solid on the MB but the pins may not be all the way thu. Good luck

he said he heard all 4 clicks. The thing wont click unless it goes all the way through. its a IHS problem and not a HSF problem. Your gonna have to lap the IHS down so its flat.

Its not hard to do, the key thing is patience... and lots and lots of it.... sinec u cant apply oil on the paper like u can with a HSF ur gonna hvae to go SLOWLY and lightly but use much more repititions. As i have mentioned 1200+ grit sandpaper is only recomended and ur gonna need a lot of it... 4-5 sheets should be enough.

Anyhow i had the same problem with another cpu and i lapped it and the temps went right down. Dont think about removing the IHS because IHS removal on a C2D is much more complicated then a AMD X2 or a old P4

Hey guys thanks for the input. I finally found some time to to put your advice to the test. I lapped the cpu and coolersink. I guess it took about an hour to tear it down do the work and get it all back together.

I did have a bit of a scare though, when I got everythng hooked back up I hit the power button and I got a quick blue flash (hd led) and then nothing. All of the fans were running and the mb led was lite but nothing else was happening. So I decided to take apart again and see if I could find anything wrong. I took the cooler back of to take a look at the as5 contact patch and that looked nice and thin but even across the entire heatspreader. so I reassembled everything and fired it up and presto , it came to life.

Now that I could relax abit, I decided to get core temp up and orthos running. Core temp shows 37 at idle, and after 20 min. of orthos it was up to 57. All and all not bad, I knocked off about 5 from idle and loaded temps. I think I may have also knocked about 5 years off of my lifespan with the scare though😉
