Agreed...just played 2 hours with it, works better then before. If you want to play and have it look better then Glide or D3D try the OpenGL. Once you do you won't go back. The detail is stunning, check out the earth in Facing Worlds as an example.

Epic should have done it this way in the first place...BAH

I am sticking with Loki's OpenGL (allows S3TC for Nvidia cards)

Runs faster than D3D, and looks great.

Thats exactly what this is. Daniel Vogel now works for Epic. What J105 posted is an updated "Loki" driver.

Is it brighter than the old Loki drivers? I tried it but it was almost too dark to play. Will try this one out tonight once I get back to my computer.

Yes, the brightness slider now works. There is a problem for Radeon users though :( When you launch the game in OpenGL, it will crash with a kernel error. The only way to get around it is to start in D3D, then switch to OpenGL. Real PITA. This happens in 707x and above drivers. The older drivers don't do this but have that missing texture problem.

If anyone knows a work around, I'd love to hear it!

Make sure you set "detailed textures" off... leaving the .ini settings the way Vogel @ Epic would rob you of 10+ fps... and with S3TC, you don't need the detailed textures anyway.

Excuse my ignorance but where do I find the UT ini file? Also how do I set UT up to use OpenGL instead of D3D...In preferences? I'm new to this game so be gentle. To set "detailed textures" to off do you just change the value from 1 to 0?

Thanks

In your UnrealTournament/System directory.

<< Also how do I set UT up to use OpenGL instead of D3D...In preferences >>

Options>video, then change to OpenGL. Make sure you install high resolution S3TC compressed textures and change your ini file.

Hmm, you huys are really tempting me to try it. I run the game at 640 x 480 x 32. When you use the new driver and enable S3TC, do your framerates increase?

I followed the instructions but when I try to run the game it crashes yielding a message that says "Assertion Failed..." and I get kicked back to the desktop.

Get the file and ini settings here. Its not for the "memory challenged". Lots of ram and video memory help quite a bit. There are some pretty large textures. For this to work, you MUST install the high res textures off the 2nd UT CD!!

HappyGamer2, you won't be able to use the 2nd CD textures under OGL, stick with D3d.

I don't think frame rates increase with s3tc enabled like the Savage 2000 cards.

Robo: Shouldn't he be using glide?

actually, the framerates do increase with DXTC and S3TC

as far as glide is concerned, if I'm LAN'ing, I'll use glide, but for single-player, D3d looks awesome and runs very well now.

I put it in and edited my .ini file and put in the TNT=1 line as they suggest but I still get an error on start and it exits back to the desktop.
Win2K + TNT2 w/Det 6.50 128 megs ram P3 700e @ 868mhz
Also can't get brightness to work at all, game is very dark in D3D mode.
Any ideas? Thanks,

yep I usually use glide, almost always use glide for muti-player, but I sometimes play around with D3D or open gl in single player, allways have to tinker around ya know

WTF! I was using Loki's driver and getting 75fps+ I just installed the new beta drivers from Epic and I am getting 20fps, plus it looks like software mode (all grainy). Anyone else have this problem? I added the OpenGL section to my ini file just like the web page said.

edit: Forgot to mention I am running a GeForce2 MX card.

Hmm, must have been an ini setting. I used my old ini setup and the new driver and I am getting like 100fps. Good enough for me.

Wiz: Try what oldfart said, go into the game with D3D (I don't think the beta opengl.dll would change the brightness of your D3D setings), and then change to OpenGL, works for me and doesn't give me the error when I start UT.

Robo: You are probably right, I seem to notice that the speed is slower, but maybe it's just the load time, I don't know. =)

How did you fix-it ? you just replace the with the new Open gl file without any INI* modifications and it's ok ?

Wiz-

Disable precaching, should solve your problem(at least, it has in the past with the same issue you are having).

Got to get around to testing this new one out, haven't fired up UT in a while now:)
