I think this is a SUPERB initiative...but why no animated avatars? I can only think of two reasons. Correct me if I'm wrong.

1. Bandwith
2. Animations can hide malicious code.

They are annoying as hell. AnandTech is a professional forum and animated gifs make it look like a children's playpen.

I didn't realize that was the case, and I know it's annoying when I see a link and it's subscriber only, so I thought I was providing a nice courtesy to the subscribers.

Nope. All of the animation is part of the gif file format, no code is run, it's no more dangerous than our current avatars (well, perhaps visually dangerous :disgust: )
