No, it mean I paid to be a subscriber and it does it for me automatically. I'm on a clean install, mang.

The host file trick is used by non-subscribers to have subscriber.anandtech.com take them to forums.anandtech.com

Subscribers have the conversion from forums.anandtech.com to subscriber.anandtech.com done automatically by the server.

I think this is a SUPERB initiative...but why no animated avatars? I can only think of two reasons. Correct me if I'm wrong.

1. Bandwith
2. Animations can hide malicious code.

They are annoying as hell. AnandTech is a professional forum and animated gifs make it look like a children's playpen.

OK. Valid, rational thinking...thank you. I agree; this IS a professional forum. Fully 1/2 of "what I know" I got the basics/initiative, here. 🙂

I didn't realize that was the case, and I know it's annoying when I see a link and it's subscriber only, so I thought I was providing a nice courtesy to the subscribers.

Nope. 🙂 All of the animation is part of the gif file format, no code is run, it's no more dangerous than our current avatars (well, perhaps visually dangerous :disgust: )
