I know what you're saying, i just plopped down $400 on mine and I'll be damned if i'm gonna slap one of these on it. Now if it was for my HTPC, maybe, but I wouldn't spend 400 on a video card for my hTPC either

Half the posts on this forum don't fit the description of a true hot deal (just look at all the x800 and gf6800 threads, very few are actually a hot deal as most are just instock msrp offerings). If mods want to move it to a discussion forum or something thats fine, so far its just a collective list of instock offerings and will be updated as more places/better prices are found.

There for a while, the 6800 being in stock at MSRP was a hot deal because it was so hard to find people who had them in stock and wasn't price gouging. Something being in stock but at almost double MSRP - unless maybe it's a $1 item, will never be a hot deal IMO.

yes. you would have to remove the heatsink on your video card (voiding whatever warranty is on it) to put one of these on.

Of course, if you can still put the stock heatsink back on, without it looking like it had ever been removed... ;)

You void the letter of the warranty so in legal terms yes its void. But actually many video card manufacturers will still honor warranty returns anyway even if the GPU cooler has been changed. this is because there is no physical reason why a 3rd party GPU cooler won't work assuming you don't make any mistakes and break the thing. If you do then thats entirely your problem. ATI is a good example of this.

I got two of these... the Ati Silencer 1 and 2, clearly labeled for use on an Ati 9600XT. I own a Gigabyte 9600XT, a fairly mainstrem card... Neither cooler fits the card!! So, for kicks I try them both on my Sapphire 9600. Again, neither cooler fits either card!! WTF? I asked Scythe that question... no answer for 1 week as of today!

SeventySeven,
In what way is Ati Silencers incompatible with the 9600 series? I'm thinking of buying one to put on a powercool 9600 pro. It really sucks spending that amount of money and to find out that it does not work. :brokenheart:

Apparently Newegg hasn't realized their $56 price is on the verge of double that of FrozenCPU's $32 price...

They're still selling out of them.

And FCPU is OOS also.

The coolers (Ati 1 and 2) did not work on either card (Sapphire 9600 and Gigabyte 9600XT) due to a capacitor in each case.

The official Scythe response is that they have non-English speaking/reading employees packaging these and there could have been a mix up at that stage!!

If that is true... considering both of mine were wrong, I wonder how widespread that problem will be!!

Thanks Self,

Got the ATI S 3. Price was the best I've seen on that model. No Tax. Shipping for that and a few other things I needed was just so-so.

Price is soo much better than Newegg's was last time I checked.

Thanks for the link Self, I snagged an ATI 3 for myself. The price was much better than what I would've paid at newegg.

No problem fellas :) Glad to help out...

I would pick up an NV5 edition, but I live in Washington so I have tax and shipping. Shipping was over $9 and I live less than 20 miles away. :(

Quick question, how well would one of these cool if I were to cut the duct a little. I was thinking of trimming off the part that extends from behind the heatsink out to the back of the case, so I would be able to fit one of these into my Shuttle XPC with a window.

Regardless Newegg is price gouging and this is not a hot deal.

The MSRP varies between $24.95 and $29.95 for the different revisions of the cooler. So the price should be that or less. I'll wait for SVC to carry them.

Link to the Prices and Pics

yeah, newegg seems to have gotten really bad about this lately. their service is great, but i'm not a fan of any comp that charges OVER msrp just 'cause it's early in the product cycle and supply is tight.

Ditto

I have spent thousands at Newegg over the past several years mainly because of their terrific service. However I have noticed lately that their prices are almost commodity based. They should be close to MSRP's but what they're doing lately is leaving a sour taste in my mouth.

I picked up a NV Silencer 5 at Coolerguys because of their price gouging.

If I try to put an NV5 on my Gainward 6800GT, will I have to take the ramsinks off as well?
Anybody done this yet?
(Those fans are REALLY loud!)

TIA

Yes you will, but I wouldn't do that. Either use the expertool to slow them down or run them at a lower voltage with a fan controller...or possibly replace the fans.

Oh well. I wasn't too keen on having to remove the ramsinks...

I initially had expertool doing the dynamic regulation, but it would change so often that my wife was getting annoyed.

So, I chose the other option and I have the fans run at 50% when doing 2D stuff, but go up to 80% when running 3D. I really want to go lower when doing 3D, but I'm afraid of cooking it. Anybody know what's a safe upper limit for the temperature?
