I'm actually glad AMD didn't spend the resources to add CU's to the RX 590. AMD's graphics folks needs to be totally focused on Navi and 7nm. Polaris was yesterdays news and is not going to get them where they need to be. The fact Intel is joining the discreet GPU game only adds more importance to this.

First GPU is 1576base/1645 MHz boost.
Second GPU: 1580 Base/1680 MHz boost.

If AMD would use GDDR5 9000 MHz, with 1680 MHz GPU - we would be talking about GTX 1070 class performance.

1680 MHz boost clock is 250 MHz higher than the highest boost clock we have seen on RX 580(1430 MHz).

Also I wonder, if AMD will base all of their refreshed products on Polaris 30. It appears that Radeon RX 580 2048 GCN core is coming to rest of the world.

RX 570 - 1792 GCN cores, and RX 560 - 1536? and low clocked, with 192 Bit memory bus, to fit in under 75W TDP?

For me - it is impossible, IF RX 590 is able to clock to 1.7 GHz almost, to be made on GloFo process. It has to be TSMC's.

The 580 would have to be seriously bandwidth limited to even get close with just slightly higher clocks and memory. You need more CUs. Even in Hitman the 1070 is 25% faster compared to the non-ref 580.
 
The link I posted above shows the 590 wont compete with the 1070 but will be noticeably quicker than the 580 and 1060.
 
The RX 580 handled 1080p well but occasionally had some issues at 1440p. These increased clocks should allow the RX 590 to be more solid at 1440p. It's not going to be enough to allow it to compete with the 1070 or even run passably at 4k. That's still going to be out of it's league.

That already exists in Radeon Pro form (WX5100) complete with 8GB memory at 75W TDP. So it's definitely doable. I'd actually like to see a consumer version of that config. It's some serious horsepower for a bus powered card.
 
Still 2304 cores is acceptable if they don't want to spend extra resources (though I wonder how difficult porting Xbox 1 X to dGPU would be since they basically did that with the original Xbox 1 already).

But still 8gbs memory when Nvidia used 9gbs over a year ago is without justification. Why not try to make your product the best it can be?

Maybe, to reliably get 9Gbps, it would require a better quality PCBs with different design/components- and AMD partners would rather not spend time and money on it, and instead- just milk current designs and offer better prices?

Not necessarily. They may require some tweaking, but nothing substantial.

I disagree. Even one engineer working on modifying Polaris to work with 9gbs RAM is one engineer not working on 7nm & Navi.

Let’s be bluntly honest here, AMD was dying and Dr. Su saved it. She focused intently on Ryzen and Navi, giving Vega only an anemic number of engineers. It paid off. Ryzen, while not equal to Intel’s offering in IPC, laid a serious slap down on Intel with total value. Threadripper was a side project, a distraction even, but it produced something unique that has made Intel jump through hoops to come up with a response. It was a profitable distraction that paid off far more than it cost in resources.

Hopefully Navi will be the GPU equivalent of Ryzen, but I doubt it. Nvidia hasn’t been resting on its laurels as much as Intel was. So it’s even more important that she not let the GPU division get distracted. Would a 9gbs RX 590 pay the same kind of dividends that Threadripper did? Not a chance.

IMHO, the only reason we’re even seeing RX 590 is it was an easy change that required the majority of the work to be done by the fab or engineers that weren’t needed for Navi/7nm. The cost in resources was small compared to the benefit gained (benefit can be measured by market share gained or reducing market share lost.)

9Ghz is still too slow for polaris at 1600+ Mhz.I think 10Ghz GDDR5x is needed.But they will use crap old 8Ghz anyway.Just another example how kill decent card🙄
i can see polaris at 1650Mhz with 10Ghz gddr5x around 20-25% faster than rx580 easily.With old crap 8Ghz it will be up to 10% again....

AMD gpu divison just sucks compared to cpu division.I cant believe they really using 8Ghz ram with 1600+ core.

Btw rx480 was like 1250mhz boost?And it was already memory bandwidth bottleneck.

For that Sapphire model but other models will be higher clocked according to the article I posted. Time will tell so I'll pass judgement when the actual products are tested and shipping.

Can't believe that we really are headed for a third iteration of Polaris without any real changes. Things have been really abysmal for the sub $300 market in the last few years (Essentially stuck with the same performance for ~$250 for the past three/four years).

However, this just shows how big of a failure Vega was for the gaming market. A "small Vega" based 590 or something similar was probably needed a long time ago (Vega 64 was released more than a year ago). Even a bigger Polaris would've been competitive and could've shaken things up. Hopefully the 590 will surprise me... it might have a chance of getting close to a Fury X at 1080p...
