New Alien Movie to be direct sequel to Aliens

It's not just entertainment, it's a movie, just one form of entertainment. Transformers 14 or a literal retard with a flamethrower on youtube could be very entertaining, hell they could even be the same thing, but that doesn't make them good movies. You can't have a story without plausibility, and you can't have a good movie without a story. That's what I was getting at earlier in the thread with this.

I realize I'm playing into your hand because my expectations of what makes a good movie obviously differ from yours... but you're wrong 😛

I was responding to his disbelief that anyone could like the movie and how it relates to the same ideology that causes larger conflict. Different people perceive it differently and expectations are different. Say a movie is overwhelmingly thought of as a great movie, there are still people who hate it for their own personal reasons. It doesn't make them idiots and it doesn't necessarily make them wrong. They just have different takes/things they expect out of a particular movie. That expectation may completely 180 for a different movie.

It's this general lack of empathy, acceptance and looking down upon people with differing perspectives that cause problems from forum arguments to all out war. I personally see all the plot holes of the movie, and while it isn't my favorite movie, I don't hate it and can see why people would like or dislike it.

Same thing with music, sports, etc.

a great movie has influence and achieves cult status.
Aliens did right?

Greatness through consensus.

This x infinity. Prometheus was fucking retarded; my piss-drunk dreams have fewer plot holes than that steaming piece of garbage:

- just set foot on a foreign planet, let's all take our helmets off!
- unknown alien environment, LETS TOUCH EVERYTHING!
Gotta love that. That happens so often in sci-fi movies, where everyone's desperate to remove their helmets.
"Sensors don't detect anything toxic."
Oh good, I'm glad that they've pre-determined every possible combination of anything that could be fatal or harmful.
And so what if any alien microorganisms don't know how to properly live in your body.
Even if it's not ideal, they might just want a warm place to stay while they excrete arsenic or metabolize the oxygen in your blood.

I also love the enormous suitable-for-cameras helmets they always have, which are also typically made out of 1/16"-thick soda lime glass that's tempered to shatter only at just the right moment.

- oh noes we're stuck in the cave because of the storm and so scared - cut - found live alien snake, let's pet it!
- just found alien life, biggest scientific discovery in the history of mankind - cut - cry about not being able to get knocked up (was that really 5 minute plot device to be able to do the abortion scene? that's it??)

Just soo fucking stupid. Much like Lost, there isn't a coherent idea anywhere in that fucking plot. That man needs to stick to writing asinine tv shows.
And we got to see the very impressive automated medical pod that just happened to be able to figure out how to do a rapid extraction of a live alien from someone's abdominal cavity.
Those were some darn good programmers. That, or else all of our space exploration missions ended up finding little critters that loved making themselves at home inside a warm human body, and the "Emergency Alien Extraction Module" shipped standard with the software suite.

I can respect that opinion, now that it's all laid out. I just get irritated when movies with potential are constantly thrown away for no good reason, and then those crappy movies go on to make money and even be defended because the general public can't help but conflate "entertainment of some kind" and "movies".

Also I'm going to start referring to this visual aid from now on.

LOL I could see a sci-fi-ish comedy parodying that in some way.

:sneaky: but I still liked it.

I don't think its that bad of a movie, the plot is rather unique and interesting but I had a real issue with the fact that they completely jettisoned the Aliens 2 story and made that movie irrelevant within first few minutes of Aliens 3. I just don't understand why anyone would do that....... the bad CGI effects were a problem as well.

On that note while I thought the first AVP was a complete pile of garbage I actually really liked the second one.
They were considered ground-breaking at the time. IIRC, it even won some awards. When I look at it I see that they couldn't even get the lighting right so the aliens look completely disconnected from the scene.

I liked World War Z quite a bit. Was definitely messy, but very enjoyable.

Saw it in theater and was incredibly disappointed. Maybe it holds up better today, but back then it was a turd. I never watched it again.

I can imagine that, the quality of the CGI takes off several million stars off any rating for that film. After one has seen it a few times (assuming one gets that far), one might just try not to look very much at those particular scenes 🙂

It would be interesting to see someone have a proper crack at re-doing the CGI in those scenes with today's tech.

Just an FYI as I've seen a few people point out the "CGI" in Alien 3, the Alien was actually a puppet that was composited into the frame, so entirely practical.

We are talking about the CGI alien. It was the first to have a CGI alien and it was done very poorly. The puppets were fine in Aliens, but the "ground-breaking" CGI alien in ALI3N was terrible. It supposedly won accolades for it, but that has to be purely for the novelty of it.

So it's like a "midquel"? I guess that's a little different having it in the middle as opposed to a prequel or way in future. What's the right term for a sequel in the middle of a movie series?

As I said, the Alien in Alien 3 was a puppet, not CGI.

Yep, but there was something about the way they pulled things together which made it look oddly CGI so the confusion is understandable.

I agree, something about how it's been scaled up from 1/3rd or the imperfect lighting gives it a resemblance to CGI.

And, as *I* said, you are wrong. There was also CG. Bad, but praised anyway at the time, CG.
This doesn't need to turn into some pointless argument, just look it up, there are dozens of articles online explaining how it's not CGI. I even linked you to the production video where they explain how they used a puppet. Was only mentioning it to begin with because I find it very interesting since it's so misunderstood.
