New Alien Movie to be direct sequel to Aliens

I get it that Sigourney Weaver knocked it out of the park in the first two movies, but I too wish they would move past this single character and give us a new character to latch onto.

There are plenty of strong, female characters who could pick up the mantle. Hell, get creative and make a strong, black female character be the lead or something.

My nominations are the Danai Gurira (Michonne from The Walking Dead) or Viola Davis.

How is the BR quality for Alien and Aliens?

This version of Alien is the best one. It is amazing, I was blown away at how good it is. If you don't get the others, but like this movie, this is the version to get. The only complaint I've seen about this version is that a few casts skin looks kind of waxy, but it doesn't bother me.

Aliens is good quality, but it doesn't compare to the Alien print in quality. I would say it is slightly better than the DVD print and looks bad compared to the BR Alien print.

As for Alien 3, I have to admit, I barely noticed any difference between theatrical version and the one here. Unless someone specifically pointed out the differences, I wouldn't know.

Agree, but the story is hers really. It would be like making a Die Hard w/o Bruce Willis at this point. It may sell, but it wouldn't sit well.

Prometheus was/is their shot at doing what you suggest, however since they went with the "its not really a prequel" route, it's hard to say. The storyline could potentially take them anywhere now. Suppose Prometheus 2 never ends up on LV-246 and it's all about the rest of the universe. The possibilities are endless to make this truly it's own entity only slightly tied to the same universe as Alien, but it remains to be seen if that's the route they take.

Pretty bad ass! Although I don't remember much from that movie. That scene, Lance Hendrickson, the black guy who was in the first Resident Evil movie...thats about it, but nothing really horrible so it couldn't have been that bad.

I agree. Still not sure why Prometheus is so divisive. I loved the atmosphere of that movie. It left me with a lot of question that I actually care about getting the answers to as well. The only thing that would anger me about it is if there wasn't a sequel.

Prometheus could have added to the greatness to the two first films, but Ridley Scott gave too much faith to the epic stupidity that is Lindelof.

Interesting that Scott did this as he's a control freak and no slouch when it comes to analyzing scripts (maybe Lindelof had pictures of Scott screwing a donkey or something)

There is some precedent in life where you have the most incompetent people get mixed with some decent talent and unfairly get attached the credit and get promoted despite future failures. They get to "fail up." People in power think that their failure is a "one-off" and will continue to promote them.....until eventually everyone realizes that the guy is unquestionably just a stupid idiot. Plain and simple.

Lindelof is such a creature that has mystifyingly "failed up."

Tldr: huge on promise with practically no delivery. The last straw for me was when android guy was talking to the white hulk (with subtitles), and then right before hulk hulks out the android says something without subtitles, and we're never given a clue as to what happened. What the fuck was that? That's not building suspense or adding mystery, that's putting your hand down my pants then knocking me out with a suckerpunch brick to the head. Fuck you, Lindelof.

Weyland Yutani sneaks a xenomorph to a remote base on Earth. There is an outbreak and a team of colonial marines try to contain the situation with the help of a female scientist. Lots of witty dialogue and tense situations while fighting the beasts and in the end the facility gets nuked.

None of the progenitor bullshit from Prometheus, a couple of Predator observers who watch how the humans contain the scene maybe. But the ending must always involve a nuke and only a couple of survivors. Bonus points if the Alien Queen is shown making intelligent decisions and of course lots of face rapers.

How is the BR quality for Alien and Aliens?

The DVD quality of Alien was pretty reasonable already IMO so I didn't pay a huge amount of attention to it (though out of curiosity I might do a comparison soon). However, Aliens was filmed using unusual film which resulted in a very grainy look that, on the DVD on a large wide-screen, gives the appearance of a badly-ripped movie to digital format (I mean a bad codec choice or something similar). Aliens certainly was remastered for BR and now looks perfectly decent.

The only reason I buy BRs is when the DVD version looks a bit shitty. The next one on my hit-list is Blade Runner but the price of the product I wanted to buy has gone up from "expensive but OK" to "are you kidding me?" 🙂

I would be curious to know if 'The Matrix' has been remastered for BR but given that it was shot digitally in the first place (fairly sure), the digital copy would have to be better than what was put on DVD in order for 'remastering' (in analog terms, re-scanning in every frame of film at a very high quality level and cleaning up any crap on the film) to work. In digital-to-digital terms I'm not sure what could be done, it's like taking a digital camera photo with your camera on a super-crappy setting.

There was some sort hulk initiative going on long before the humans ever got there to send the plague off to earth, but something went wrong. Upon awakening we can only presume that this particular hulk's first priority was to continue that initiative, which he did. It's not that the android said anything that pissed him off especially, but that the hulk realized that these were creatures from the planet that was supposed to be destroyed a long time ago, and that they were now technologically advanced and spacefaring. For some reason he considered that to be very bad, so it was time the kick the plan into overdrive. First he needed to eliminate the ones in front of him though. I think there were no subtitles there because you were supposed to be aware of all this and the specifics of what was being said weren't important. At least I didn't really care what he was saying.

The questions I care about are "Why seed a planet and then destroy it"? "What's so bad about humanity getting out into space"? "What purpose does the plague serve, and why mess around with it if it's as dangerous as it clearly is"? A side question that really doesn't interest me as much, but we're clearly meant to be asking is "Where do the aliens fit into this"? The movie did enough to make me want the answers to some of those questions, so I'm in for the sequel.

They didn't spell it out but it is thought that "Jesus" was really one of their people, who then the humans crucified. This enraged them and they were going to destroy humanity. Again, this is theory, and who knows, it may be left as something that gets touched on in P2.

Cameron has said in the past that Aliens was shot on a high speed negative which contributed to excessive grain however much talk of poor transfers surrounded the LD and DVD release, since corrected with newer HD transfers.

Matrix was shot on Super 35. There was a new transfer for HD-DVD which as I recall corrected color timing and removed some of the noise/graininess. Not sure if an entirely new transfer was done for BR at any point.

That's just it, a good story doesn't hold your hand but it does provide answers to the relevant questions it raises; if the audience has to make a ton of assumptions or invent entire theories and backstories out of whole cloth then you have utterly failed as a writer. For example, Inception or Blade Runner was (more or less) mysterious in the right ways, but Prometheus was just inscrutable.

Good to hear I'll be picking those 2 up then 🙂, when they joked about seeing Alien and Aliens hundreds of times in the show Entourage my best friend and I laughed cause that was us when we were teenagers. We wore multiple VHS tapes of each out.
