I remember the thread about the US version of The Office when it started. Everyone was claiming how it would suck compared to the British version before it even aired one episode.

...and they were right, though the show did eventually get decent in the 3rd season.

Other bands have gone on with a different lead singer, why not them?

Drowning Pool comes to mind...

Agreed. I don't know enough about AIC, but was Layne a writer for the band? If Pink Floyd could carry on without Syd and Genesis without Peter Gabriel, then why not AIC? Not every band should follow the agreement that the members of Joy Division/New Order made.

Actually, Cantrell wrote or co-wrote with Kinney, Starr and Inez most all of the music for AIC.
Staley contributed heavily to the Lyrics for the Band and his vocal stylings helped shape their Grunge sound. Cantrell's Bluesy and haunting Guitar sound is what attracted me to the Band in the fist Place. So I'm interested to hear their new Material!...:D

The singer kicks ass.

I'm a diehard AIC fan. More AIC is good! RIP Layne but life goes on.

They still rock. I am all for new AIC.

This this and this. Saw them @ the Comcast center before VR, they made the show. He's no Layne but he's a respectable substitute. I'm hoping a good live performance translates into a good studio album...

I was a HUGE AIC fan.

I was very sad that Layne died.

That being said, if the singer is good, then this is good news. Jerry Cantrell was (is) the driving force behind the band. Layne had a great voice, but it wasn't "his" band. Its Jerrys.

NO

Hopefully all master copies will be burned and the band lose all their fingers in a car accident so that it cannot be reproduced. This is like the whalers without Bob Marley or the A-Team without Mr T.

I'm not saying the band members should never record or play music again.

And I'm also not saying they're incapable of making good music without Layne.

What I AM saying is that they shouldn't call themselves "Alice in Chains". Case in point... RATM. Zack De la Rocha quits, they get Chris Cornell and call themselves Audioslave.

New singer, new band name. Just seems like an attempt to capitalize off the name.

THat was a terrible attempt to make a point.

Audioslave sucked ass in a profound and unexpected way.

That's a totally different scenario. They didn't call themselves RATM because they were going in a completely different direction with their music. The two bands sound nothing like one another. Had they just replaced Zack with another singer and kept playing the same music, then sure, its still RATM.

AC/DC replaced Bon Scott and didn't change their name. Metallica has changed bass players twice and didn't change their name. Journey has replaced their singer twice and is still Journey. Examples go on and on. If you're still keeping the spirit of the band alive, then its still the same band, just with a different peice of the puzzle.

But going from RATM->Audioslave was not in that same category by a long shot.

I've seen them "Live" with the new lead singer.

He sounded a little TOO much like Layne. To the point where the wife and I felt like they were piping in Layne's vocals some.

Speaking of Van Halen, who would've been happy had they changed their name to Van Hagar during Sammy's time as frontman?

There's a series of youtube vids of them in the studio making the album, some of the riffs they were fooling around with are *heavy* and very much Cantrell/signature AIC. Duvall does seem to have some guitar chops too, he's played lead guitar in other bands. If they can incorporate a bit of a twin guitar attack for this album, that could be interesting.

My expectations for any old groups trying to re-form are always low. Usually it sucks, sometimes I'm pleasantly surprised, and occasionally I'm really impressed. My hopes are somewhat higher for this, I think it'll at least blow away the copycat shit that AIC unfortunately spawned in the late 90's/00's, whatever that's worth.

Sammy Hagar and Van Halen were better as separate acts. I liked only two songs by Van Hagar, respect the wind and right here right now.

Neither of which were Van Halen songs.

Respect the Wind was an instrumental on the Twister soundtrack done by Alex and Eddie Van Halen, and Right Here, Right Now is a Jesus Jones song.

But I know you meant "Right Now", by Van Halen with Sammy.

They had a lot of good hard rock songs with Sammy, but for some reason, everyone fixates on the keyboard-driven, popular songs they had....which were only a few. But that's what casual VH fans relate with the Sammy era.

Cabo Wabo and Summer Nights are probably my two favourite VH tunes. Well... actually Panama would be #1. Drop Dead Legs, I don't even know if that is the name of the song... But that Diamond Dave VH tune ROCKS too.

I like most of the Balance album though. I loves me some VH. Saw them live with Sammy on the Balance tour... They rocked big time.

I guess I'll at least give it a chance..I'm just afraid that if it sucks it'll taint AIC for me

*taps sarcasm meter*

That was sarcasm. I'm saying that just because the lead singer dies, doesn't mean the band dies.
