hd6950 1 gig should be about $25 cheaper than the 2 gig version, pretty much forcing the gtx560 to be $240-250.

It will be interesting to see if the 1 gig of ram makes a difference in performance..

Probably won't if you don't game at high res (2560x1600 and above). There may be a couple games that would benefit at 1920x1200 with loads of AA or for those games with high-resolution texture packs available (Oblivion, Stalker, etc.).

It's nice to have this option, but I hope amd isn't planning to scrap the 2 gb model as a result.

I think it's a smart move by amd. 6950 1gb is more confusing than just calling it a 6930, though I'm sure that they are saving 6930 for harvested gpus.

Well, according to the article, the only thing they're skipping with the 1 gb version is just that - the extra 1 gb buffer, so it wouldn't be in their best interest to make the card sound slower than it is by naming it "hd 6930" anyway (especially when the 5830 wasn't exactly known as a glaring success).

I doubt that. It would be useless in Crossfire.

Right, that'd be silly. I think an even bigger advantage for the 2 gb cards (at least from amd's perspective) is the marketing impact of having that much vram, since most people associate having more ram with delivering more performance in a video card (and god knows amd needs to step up their marketing programs)

So you are saying that 2 overclocked 5870's in crossfire are useless?
Thats the same thing, a 5870 overclocked = 6950.

And I not talking about the 1% of poeple who have 2500x1600 monitors.

The extra ram does help with minimums, we will have to see how they perform but I think for most people this might bring down the performance of the 6970/6950 to a more tasteful price.

No an overclocked 5870 is not equal to a 6950. Different cards.

Yes 1GB 6950s are useless in crossfire, by the time you are able to use all that GPU power (90% scaling) You are likely to run out of Vram. Just like the many occasions that the 5970 does, even at 1920x1080.

Bear in mind that enthusiast who buys videocards for high resolution gaming or Crossfire setup will buy the 2GB version because they have the money to spend. Money conscious buyers definitively they're willing to sacrifice some performance for savings, hence, cards like the HD 5770 or GTX 460. And now that AMD is releasing the HD 6950 1GB, it will make the GTX 560 a far less attractive option except for those who needs nVidia features.

1gb is enough for modern games at those settings.

Most games as 1080p 4xAA take up around 700mb of vram.

Yep. I'm doing fine with a 768mb GTX 460. You can enable 16X CSAA without incurring much of a performance penalty as well. CSAA uses very little memory.

A overclocked 5870 1gb is equal to a 6950 and sometimes faster.

Now you still say 6950's are useless in x-fire, so that means all those who bought 5870's overclocked and x-fired them @ 1920x1080 have useless systems?

You are NOT likely to run out of ram with a 5870 1gb card @ 1920x1080.

Please show me some proof of this theory, or take back this blantent lie.

Here is a true statement.
You don't need more then 1gb or ram unless you have a 2500x1600 monitor or run eyeinfinity or surround.
Care to challenge that statement?
