I can't believe it. The first day in 3 months that you can get a 5950x at Microcenter, or at B&H, and only ONE post on the entire forum (aside from mine) I thought people would be excited.
My local Microcenter only has the 5600X in stock.

Well, I looked, and several microcenters did, online I saw it. Yours just didn't. But still, between B&H and the few microcenters that do, this has not happened in months. And ebay prices are dropping on 5950x's. Down to 1100, not that I would pay that, just an indicator of availability IMO.

Do you have any plans as far as if you're planning on running it stock or with a PPT power limit set or eco mode? I would be curious to know how it compares to a 3950x at the same PPT setting or eco mode setting. I've been interested in getting a 5950x but with the availability issues picked up a couple 3950x's instead at a pretty good price. I would be curious to know, in the same approximate amount of power usage, just how much better a 5950x would be at DC.

OK, preliminary tests. First 2 systems.

2695v3 Xeon, 14 cores@2.6 ghz with 2080TI doing F@H 445 watts.

3950 Ryzen 16 cores @ 4 ghz with 2080TI doing F@H 490 watts.

The 5950x comes tomorrow, and the system is ready. It will replace the 2695v3. I was hoping for less power usage. Looks like maybe not, but WAY more computing power. The 2695 with no video doing F@H was 195, so 250 watts for the 2080TI. So 240 for the 3950x at the current bios settings (might need some tweaks, not sure what)

Edit: both are total power from the wall using kill-a-watt identical units.

Edit 2.. The 2695 uses one 140 mm fan. The 3950x uses a 280mm AIO. What do you think is the power usage difference ? The 5950x will be using a fan also.

The 2695 is doing 25 current WCG tasks, and the 3950 is doing 31 current WCG tasks. So right now the AIO could be the main difference in power.

Edit 3::: Boy the production time is WAY different. 3 hours 23 minutes for MCM tasks for the 2695, and 2 hours 20 minutes for the 3950.

From WCG stats

Looks like over twice the points for 45 watts more power. And maybe less due to the AIO

The AIO's pump and fans certainly pull only a few Watts, putting them at a similar order of magnitude as all the onboard and peripheral devices in a computer, and at a lower magnitude than the power losses in the mainboard's and the PSU's power conversion.

(It's also a lower magnitude than the variation of power usage of a big GPU like 2080Ti when running a variable workload like F@H. But these variations should even out between the two computers over time.)

This is driving me crazy ! The 5950x is at the place where it gets loaded into the delivery track, but it should have been loaded hours ago ! And I have to sit at home waiting for it. I need to go get an xray, but I can't leave, since it requires a signature.

Now it says on vehicle for delivery at 8:47 am. Talk about slow IT response....

Fast ? WRONG ! It does not like booting from a different chipset, no internet. So installing from scratch.

HELP !. First time this has happened. Motherboard is the MSI X570 Tomahawk WIFI, but after the initial linux install, no network access, so I am dead. Whats up ? How to I fix this ?

OK, I think I have drivers installed, working on WCG setup, downloading units.

Edit: That didn;t take long. 30 or 31 tasks going (I don't have BOINCTASKS setup yet) running 195 watts, same as the 2695v3, but with more tasks.. Now, how long do they take ? And I will do F@H later.

So, my first MCM units look like they will finish in 1:50 instead of 2:20, quite a difference. I guess I need more units to tell for sure. Memory 4000 running at 3800/1900.

Its running one hour 50 minutes consistantly on MCM, where the 3950x is doing 2:20. Thats a BIG difference. Both at stock One with 3200 cl14 memory, and one with 400 (running 3800 cl18)

I need to go to bed. I just checked, and open pandemics was even better over the 3960x than MCM. 2 hours and 10 minutes. vs 1 hour and 20 ? But I do see one now at 1:51.

Anyway, I need more input, later, too tired to think straight.

There was an easy way to install folding in linux, and for the life of me, I forget. it was something like

sudo apt-get fahclient fahcontrol

But that does not work

Edit: figured that out. Download the packages, then go to downloads and open using package manager.

New problem, I will look at the folding thread, as I think I remember the fix was there. "disabled gpu:-1:-1"

Edit: Figured that out too. Even though I installed the opencl driver

sudo apt install ocl-icd-opencl-dev

You have to reboot after, a stop/start will not work.

I am all up and running ! WCG and F@H

OK< final comparisons. Only one example, but multiples cases of it. 5950x does MCM units in 2 hours, vs the 3950x does them in 2 hours 20 minutes.

Power usage running 31 WCG tasks and a 2080TI for F@H

5950x 440-442
3950x 490

The 5950x is more power efficient and 17% faster. I have matching kill-a-watt units on them, so I can check all the time. The only differences are the 5950x has 2 NVME drives and a single fan vs the 3950x has a single NVME drive and a 280mm AIO.

They have the same core count right? What are their clock speeds running WCG?

PS Your sig needs updating ;)

Both 4 ghz, both 16 cores, 32 threads. Only difference, one is 3rd gen, and one is 4th gen. Oh, and both of these are on x570 motherboards.

sig updated...

Thanks for posting the comparison. It sounds like the 5950x will be a great cruncher.

If you already know about the this just disregard what I'm about to post, but depending what your goals are(max speed vs max efficiency) you could probably get those machines down to something like 300 watts(maybe 350) by setting eco mode in the bios, and then lowering the power limit of the 2080ti. It will lower the performance somewhat, but it should be a much lower percentage of performance lost than power efficiency gained. Eco mode should be in the bios somewhere like Overclocking --> Advanced CPU Options --> Precision Boost Overdrive and have settings for 65w, 95w, etc. The higher the wattage the better performance generally, but it uses more power of course. There's usually a PPT limit in a similar spot, that can be set manually instead of eco mode if that's preferable, and should perform similarly.

As far as changing the Nvidia card power limit you would just open a linux terminal and this is the command(the last number is what you're setting the power limit to in watts)

sudo nvidia-smi -i 0 -pl 200
