As a fan of Ridley Scott after hearing about the Alien vs. Predator travesties then hearing about a more direct Alien prequel that became this. Set in the same universe (maybe? not quite?) but perhaps a re-imagining of the source material. Yes I am excited because even if Ridley Scott is just repeating himself it is still (as a fan) worth seeing for me.

It's a prequel more or less.

Prometheus is a prequel? HORRIBLE marketing then. 2nd to only John Carter.

never would have known by the title or the trailers that it's in the Aliens universe.

not officially a prequel but he was working on an official alien prequel that fell apart. this is basically the same story with a few details changed to keep the lawyers away

Bummer it looks more futuristic than Alien does. I think they could have made it look like the same time period and tech as Alien if they really put their mind to it.

It doesn't matter all that much that it's in the Alien universe because it only vaguely references the other movie and the "alien" xenomorph does not appear. The stories do not arc together and Ridley Scott himself says it's technically not a prequel.

The main link to the other movie is that we find out some details about another race. We saw a corpse of this race in the first movie. It had been piloting the crashed alien ship where the xenomorph eggs were found. That corpse had previously been referred to only as "the space jockey" by the original film crew.

Well, this Prometheus ship is some state-of-the-art exploration vessel and I think it's supposed to be humanity's greatest achievement. I'm not surprised that it's VERY different from the commercial towing vessel Ripley commanded in the first movie (Nostromo). Most of the other tech we see is alien technology.

...also, I'm not surprised to see big differences in tech for each ship / mission. It takes them decades to travel in stasis, if I recall correctly.

I think it was part of the marketing campaign to disassociate this movie from the Alien serie. Along with heavily promoting the director's name, Ridley Scott, this created a lot of buzz in the lead up to the official trailer release.

At this point, if you're at all interested in any new science fiction movies, you would have seen the trailer and figured it out.

So essentially, from this way-to-informative trailer, it appears that the humans investigating the target, are genetically modified to become one of the "aliens" that is the corpse seen in the original Alien.

I also suspect that Charlize Theron's character is a cyborg (or whatever they call them).

Can't wait for this to come out!!!!!

Alien & Aliens are amazing films, each of these are great in their own way. Aliens takes far more risks and is hit or miss on points, I know this is kind of a sacrilegious statement to make, but it is kind of cheesy sometimes. The ending of it is just so well done though... few movies pull off a "boss fight" as well as it has, really in the history of ALL film.

One wouldn't think they the industry couldn't soil the franchise even more after the release of 3 and 4, but then the AVP SEQUELS happened. WOW. o_O Not only could the series have been continued in a quality/respectable fashion, but also a highly PROFITABLE one. Idiots. They should do a semi-reboot and start over at Alien 3. There are scripts floating around based on some comic books. Instead of the prison planet shit, just have them arrive at Earth and set this shit off. WUT.

It's perfect, the Alien(s) fans will figure it out and people who haven't seen it/didn't care for them might not know.

Also, watch the director's cuts of both of Alien and Aliens, highly recommend it over the theater version.

I'm looking forward to it.

Is it just me or
does the trailer almost willingly give away the fact that Charlize Theron's charcater is probably a robot like Ash?
.

I guess it could be a red herring.

Oddly enough I thought that was true of the Michael Fassbender character.

Yeah, the studios cut the costs and set the first Alien vs. Predators in the Antarctic...

The original comic story line by Dark Horse comics was better but it would've been much more expensive to film that storyline.

Sure it's Ridley Scott and I usually love his movies but this doesn't look that awesome.

It's Ridley Scott directing a movie set in the universe of the movie that brought him to most moviegoers' (well those who pay attention to trivia like directors) attentions.

Odds are that even if it's not brilliant it'll still be better than a majority of scifi that is released in theaters.

LOL How young are some of these people posting? Never seen Alien or Aliens? If you like Sci-Fi or horror at all see them. Alien is more sci-fi horror, Aliens is more sci-fi action. They are not identical movies aside from the main character and the aliens (well..there are many similarities, but not in the traditional sense).

Prometheus appears to be more straight on Sci-Fi. I have a feeling that there will be a subset of audience that are going to really hate this movie. It's an expanded story that does not revolve around the main aliens from the films.. Regardless of how far they try to distance the "prequel" notion though, the fact that the derelict ship is crashing really points to it setting up the stage for Alien, but we'll only really know that once the movie comes out.
