Why are you guys so excited about this? What am I missing?

I know it's Ridley Scott and takes place in same universe as his Alien. The trailer looks good, but nothing to be crazy about. It's almost exact same plot as Alien so far (prance around at alien ship, get infected, bring it to your own ship, get owned).

And the trailer pretty much shows the ending.

I get cold shivers and the urge to go "WOOOOWWW" when i watch that trailer, i am very much excited about this movie 😀

Alien3 is underrated IMO. Some of the special effects of the alien are pretty bad but overall a good movie. The rest are pretty terrible.
...of course, by "the rest," you mean Resurrection + AvP.

Haven't seen part 3. My sister liked it. I will be watching the first 3 very soon because my Blu-Ray set of Alien Anthology is expected to arrive today.

I feel like it gives too much plot information, along with now knowing that this is an Alien prequel, I'm now bummed

It's a two hour movie with a 3 minute trailer. If that 3 minutes ruins the movie, then it would be a suck movie anyway.

So does the movie reinforce that odd hypothesis that
the space jockeys created the Alien(s) from the first two movies

I think that was a given.

Speculation I've seen is that
they created or found them, or found them in a less dangerous form and weaponized their peculiar lifecycle... a reported early draft of the prequel script seems to suggest the 3rd option

Saw this on the Wikipedia page for Alien:
Scott later commented that "It's a man in a suit, but then it would be, wouldn't it? It takes on elements of the host – in this case, a man."[27]

I think the xenomorph *is* in Prometheus, but it's form is different because it's adapted to another species. The crashed space jockey craft in Alien had been taking the human-adapted xenomorphs to Earth when it crashed.
Maybe. Who knows?

Well I just ordered the Aliens Anthology set on blu-ray in preparation for this. To say I have a chub for this movie would be an understatement.

And you young-uns, watch Alien with the lights out with no distractions straight through. That gave me nightmares for weeks. WEEKS.

I did that last week. Should have arrived today, but the apartment leasing office is closed and I'll have to pick it up tomorrow.

We haven't had GOOD sci-fi for a long time in movies IMHO. You come across an alien you had better be fucking scared outta your mind on all the possibilities of such a thing, not pretty pictures of happy harmony.

Not since that kick ass movie of the ship to neptune with a black hole drive has there been sci-fi what it needs to be. Aliens aren't supposed to be all happy to be found and help us.
