Again these companies don't give a rats ass about world records, they care about money, and WOW put every other game to shame in that one and only category that these companies care about. It's that money that spawned the endless stream of WOW clones, not Ultima (no matter how good of a game it was).
 
Sorry my intention was not to be as RUDE as I sounded (saying WoW clone makes you look like a fool" or to rile up anybody that way.. more a "there was stuff before WOW"

but back to NWN.. got on last night (no Q? after the 7000 one the day before- GOOD SHOW if you fixed it that fast). As for the game it most resembles.. I have to say TERRA or COH ..its made by Cryptic so the combat is faster paced then most of its "clones". its fairly fast combat that some actual aiming is required.. its not lock on like most, but you don't have to be terribly accurate either, there is an amount of auto targeting too.. I find it slightly fun and slightly annoying, groups of mobs are tricky.. or bothersome.. most have 2-3 trash mobs with a harder mob, targeting the trash to clean it up quick can be annoying as its hard to single um out. most combat it based on the dodge /roll (action) formula many of the newest games use. The Boss or sub boss mobs all have wind up animation or targeting circles on the ground, your job is dodging or "blinking" out of them, managing your own attacks.. I like the added skill required, but its not much deeper then the old "lock and button press" of the Old school clones you need to mind full you don't dodge into more mobs, and your skills while just spamming one will work, you are rewarded for some combo like attacks. example: mage has ice beam, longer its on target the slower it gets until its FROZE (which is just a ruoot/stun of 3 or so seconds).. the mage also has a 30 second cool down major ice shard attack.. if you FREEZE them attack with the Major Ice Shard and then hit freeze ray again, they freeze quicker the 2nd time.. but you can only do this once as the cool down on the ICE Shard attack is to long.. so there are some combo attacks (much like almost any game).

In about 3-4 hours i was 18 the first few levels where lightning.. then some slow down.. I didn't notice the standard F2P speed level till about 10 then slow it to a grind so you will pay to speed it up method most use (is this one F2P when released or monthly?) of course they may start that at 20?

I did all quests solo with zero problem (have not died yet) even did my my first group quest solo (blackbeard or something?) but I did do it 2 levels after i was supposed to do it.

Overall its fast paced, more then enough quests to start. Graphics on the Players is not real good (opinion) but the buildings and landscape are well done (but I have not left town, only sewers, ruins and basements so far). they look nice enough, not ground breaking but very "OK".

Do i see the next big thing? NOPE, do i see a fun diversion for us that love to play MMORPG's, yes.. nothing new here, but you take some tried and working game mechanics and paint um with a new coat of paint, its different enough to take a look.

I'll add to that...something like Darkfull from a reputable company AND with Tera's combat system. Once you play Tera with its combat system the combat of any other MMO just blows....haven't played any other MMO after Tera because I can't do the boring point and click / button mashing / autoface your target / etc etc anymore. Having to actually dodge attacks and aim your sword makes it so much more engaging...and reduces the current MMO crutch of best gear = win.

I tried it for a little bit and a few different classes. It just feels so average. I wanted to like it, but the entire time I was ho hum playing it. I liked all the perk/talent stuff and glad to see it looks like there is a fair bit there. So I checked out the "Zen" shop where you buy stuff with cash, holy shit are those prices freaking high. I understand it is a F2P game but damn, some of that stuff was really expensive. I play Tera so maybe that is why I don't really find anything too interesting in NWN since it plays like that mostly but isn't as interesting.

I did like the environments and thought they looked nice, I wish the same care was taken with the character models themselves. While you are given a fair bit of freedom in character creation, in the end they just don't look that great imo. I'll give it a lil bit more to be fair on it, but so far I think I will just stick to Tera when I feel like playing an MMO.

Heh. My alt is a control wizard, level 9. I haven't done much. For being a single-target attack, the wizard doesn't really do much damage (though I haven't hit the great and mighty level 10 yet, maybe that's it).

I'm level 17 with a level 16 sword and level 14 or lower everything else on my guardian fighter and I still kick ass and take names, chewing huge holes through big groups of dudes.
 
That being said, I lost connection to the game servers several hours ago. From then until now, every time I fire up the launcher, it fails to connect but I don't see any connection issues or server maintenance advertised on the website. What gives?

Terra is free to Play now too inst it? It and Secret world are the last Two I paid for, and both made me vow to never pay again. Each has some strong points.. but (opinion) neither deserves $15 a month.. When Secret World went F2P I started playing again and have enjoyed it..nothing new, but the game is at least not Sword and board or ray guns.. so that helps. I made about 48 in Terra when I decided it was not worth $15 thankfully that was about a week of playing so i could cancel before my month was u.. But much like most new MMORPG, f2p makes them much more interesting. I could take a trip back to Terra if it was.

I still say of all the MMORPG.. AOC is the best -now- f2p and much improved since release.. but once you level pretty much all classes to max.. (i have never been into e-penis end game grinding, one major reason i don't play WoW anymore, that and the continuied simplification of it) There are just so many OK f2p now.. Guildwars 2 is even pretty dang good.. (again once you lve a few to max i lose interest).

Yea, TERA is f2p now. It's a really generous f2p too, there is basically no reason at all to ever pay for anything. It's all just cosmetic stuff.

that said, it's still the same super-boring quest/instance grind it was back on launch. I made it to about 50 then and to about 45 when I picked it back up last month.

So much unrealized potential in that one. The combat system is fresh and unique and works really well. The graphics and art are great. It all just felt so formulaic and boring. There's no really interesting player or guild conflicts, no real challenge and nothing to look forward to at end game.

This one, one the other hand, has a lot of really interesting ideas and game play mechanics. But I hate how unpolished and badly documented it is. The combat and animations are so clunky and awkward I can't stand playing it.

I was joking around with my guild that Blizzard should have bought Age of Wushu, polished the hell out of it, and released it for their next project. That would be a game that could take over the world.

That was a great game. Too bad their UI sucked and they had no player base 🙁

Now that it's supposed to be out again, I'd like to play but I'm not willing to pay money to be one of, like, two people online.

No just no. I don't want Blizzard or Trion coming along and dumbing down Age of Wushu. It does need some polish and better guides (like on meridians) but I love the complexity. Every day I learn something new and slap my head and say "doh, I finally get it"

I feel bad for the people who can't get past the starter, 1st school and storyline quest. The game just gets better and better with each day you play it. Sometimes when I log in, it's really hard to figure out what to do first because there is so much to fricken do lol. This game has something for everybody with small scale pvp, large scale pvp, really fun and challenging PvE instances, crafting, school wars, guild wars, spying, kidnapping. I don't know if there are any high level massive PvE raids as the highest I've done is the 12 man GCC but we'll see.

Just everybody shutup with the WoW comparisons.
 
I've been playing the Guardian Fighter and it's quite fun.

There are people who have complained about the lack of adherence to the D&D rules set.

but there is already an MMO that does that and having played both I can say that Neverwinter is more fun when you're playing your character.

The quests aren't groundbreaking but I like the Foundry system where players can create content for others to try. If the system is robust enough then part of the content creation problem is solved if the player base is great enough.

Leveling is fun. Hopefully the "end-game" is as fun.

That's most f2p games. Sucks, cause if you actually like the game you end up paying far more than a traditional model. Taking a genre that is traditionally very grindy and adding another layer of grind to convince you to pay to progress at a reasonable rate strikes me as very frustrating.


FWIW I got in one of the beta weekends and the game was okay even if graphics were kinda low end.

That is also the strengths of F2P. If you don't like the game you get out cheap, and publishers need to actually make a game people will want to keep playing if they want to make money.
 
i dont like perfect world.

I used to be on crytpic STO until perfect world bought it out.

im seeing a new trend with F2P.
Its no longer the pay to win model, but a pay to not grind.
So while it does cost more money in the long run if u want to not grind, it ends up costing less if u do grind.

So i guess you can say Pay 2 Skip.

True, but I think game design decisions are made around how they can sell reducing the grind rather than what makes a good game. Subscription games are susceptible to this of well of course, but not to the same extent.

yeah i guess u can say that too.

cuz most pay stuff gives you a experience boost, or bonus.
Also most of the items are end game stuff which variants can be attained by grinding.

Variants being no exp or money bonuses.

Also the deluxe editions just give u starting items to help you advance faster then the regular edition players.
Not really pay to win items.

Perfect world tho has a pay to gamble system.
Which i did not like at all.
You Pay to Gamble, and possibly win unbalanced items.
STO had a gang of unbalanced Pay to Win ships which is another reason why i quit.

the age old flaw with leveling games..

the more and more i watch and read, there is no way anybody is happy with any game. 3 bears syndrome to hot, to cold.. problem is nobody ever says "just right" The simple fact is WoW had it as close to "just right" as anybody came.. but after 5 years even "just right" gets old.. so subs trailed off.. in panic mode they looked at the growing trend of casual games growth and tried to make WOW simpler.. (im not marketing wiz, but I don't think that's the answer) and subs have sank again.. but when you consider they still have (PAYING every month!!!!!) about 5-7 million MORE THEN any other game.. its like saying poor, poor me.. i had everything now i just have almost everything..

there is a simple reason people copy WoW, its the most successful, PERIOD next best is hardly 1- 10th as large.. So anybody saying WOW sucks .. well maybe for them, but the mass majority who can pick anything don't agree. I didn't quit WoW because it sucked .. i got bored.. you can only do the same thing so many times and feel its fun.. And I like most, hoped some other game would rekindle that fun.. but they ALL do the same.. player kills/shoots/ mines/collects XXXX till he levels, rinse repeat..

right now I find almost any NEW MMORPG fun for 1-3 weeks.. then its same old same old.. the new paint on the old game shows through.

damn, wall of text.. I'm just trying to say there is NOTHING NEW in MMORPG's so all this expectation of it is silly. But that doesn't mean some are better then others, you pick what you like, have fun with and go.. We are to a point the PAY2PLAY game model on MMORPG's is all but dead.. even WoW will have to do it sometime. (can you imagine Blizz going F2P.... good god would that be a SERVER killer, not to mention them making the level grind past much slower for those who don't pay) the F2P model is here to stay.. so worrying if a game is good or bad, why, go try it.. its FREE.. much like music, what i like and what you like will probably not be the same..

and sorry for all the WoW talk.. its just bound to mess this thread up, always does.. cant be any civil talk with it in the converstain it seems.. if so I am sorry.. I haven't played in 2+ , almost 3 years..
