Sheesh, seems it's actually quite complicated. Not only do several countries have a form of Thanksgiving (all on different dates) but it seems like it's related to, but not the same as, harvest festivals, that I think yet more countries have (apparently we have one of those in UK, though I don't remember anyone in my life ever mentioning it - maybe it only comes up in rural areas?).

I doubt I could explain to anyone why the US (and Canada) give it so much more prominence than do most countries. Wiki leaves me none-the-wiser as to what that's about.
