Never talk to the police.

It's a long one, but worthwhile.

A discussion from a criminal defense attorney and law professor about never talking to the police about anything without first talking to a lawyer. Lots of good examples and done in plain English that anyone can understand.

His points are:

Nothing you say can possibly do you any good. NOTHING. The only thing you should ever say is you exercise your fifth amendment right.

What you say can be used AGAINST you in court, but will never be used FOR you. Anything in favor of you will be dismissed by the judge as hearsay, but anything you say against yourself is admissible.

A 28 year cop and detective gone lawyer after him says that everything the lawyer said is correct.

Consider it a PSA.

ETA: Ok so I took EVER out of the title.

Blah blah blah blah is all I hear. If you have something to hide from the police you shouldn't be putting yourself in situations where you have to talk to them.

Never listen to BrunoPuntzJones. EVER.

An informed citizen knows when to talk or when to shut his trap and wait for his/her lawyer.

Watch the video.

Never gone over the speedlimit?

What if you are buying gas and the station gets robbed and you are a witness?

Never been in a car wreck?

Sure, I've gone over the speedlimit. I don't have anything to hide from the cops so I'm not afraid of having to *gasp* talk to them.

Next time you get pulled over, i'd like to you see you tell the cop you want to invoke the 5th amendment. Hope you enjoy riding in the back of a police car.

Don't bother Bruno, the Cop Apologist Brigade here at ATOT doesn't like this type of discussion. Sure, there's absolutely NO benefit to talking to the cops, but that's no excuse for not blatantly getting on your knees and slobbering all over their knob whenever possible.

The title is a bit misleading. It may be better as "if you are being accused of something or arrested, then it's better to say nothing". Never talking to the police can be a bad thing.

This is not a bash against cops what so ever. It's about staying out of jail or being prosecuted for something you didn't do.

These are words straight from Supreme Court justices and Chief US Attorneys.

Then you should change your thread title because you are telling people to never ever talk to Cops which is OBVIOUSLY a bad idea.

On top of that, if you are stupid enough to incriminate yourself them I'm glad you're going to jail, get your stupid ass out of my way.

I talk to them all the time. I sometimes see them getting lunch at the same place I am eating or whatever and I will have a pleasant conversation with them.

Never been to jail yet.

Yes, because no one has ever been falsely accused...

What does that have to do with talking to the police? That's a fault of the justice system, not your mouth.

Fine I'll take EVER out of the title if it makes you feel any better. Yeah you'll have to talk to police in your life most likely. But anything in regards to their work should be the 5th.

Were you born this naive or did you have to study?

The fact of the matter is that unscrupulous police occasionally talk uneducated suspects into confessing to something they didn't do, or merely cooperating in a fashion that can incriminate them, on the promise that they will be released after they cooperate. That has everything to do with the police.

I've always wanted to know, why is there always something like you in every thread about the police or the law? Just FYI: people have rights in this country. Don't like it, move to fucking China where you belong.

So when an officer pulls me over for speeding, I shouldn't talk to him? lol this is entertaining
I think most people realize there are certain things you shouldn't say. If they don't know they could be saying something self-incriminating, then they are an idiot and well, deserve whatever may happen.

if a gas station gets robbed, and an officer is questioning witnesses, I shouldn't tell him anything? Seriously?

so to combat the cop apologists, you represent the cop haters? oh how trendy and cool of you to hate cops.
I don't hate any cop until one gives me a reason to. Most I've come into contact with (through work, or my one speeding ticket) have given me no reason to distrust them.

Yes, people have rights, and are entirely free to exercise them. However, attitudes such as the OP's don't help anyone.

If you're being charged with a crime and do not wish to cooperate, then by all means get a lawyer. However, there's no reason for an absolute blanket statement such as "never talk to the police."

Apparently not, because law enforcement is so eager to pin the blame on just anyone, we don't care at all about finding the real criminal... :p

Thanks for the insult, back to the topic at hand now.

I've always wanted to know, why is there always someone like you in every thread that reads an extremely sensational thread title and assumes they are better then everyone else because they think they know more then someone else?

I like having rights, and not incriminating myself is one of them, but like JLee has said

there's no reason for an absolute blanket statement such as "never talk to the police."
